The program has been deve loped to meet the needs of novice and experienced shepherds and is open to sheep farmers throughout the entire area. The 1994 curriculum will cen ter on the role of the ewe with focus on health maintenance, dis ease prevention, diagnosis and treatment, and flock management. The program will begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. with a vid eo, “Introduction To Flock Health.” This is a “Wimock Inter national” production and made available for this occasion by the department of animal science of Penn State. Dr. D’Alessandro’s topic. “Metabolic dis eases,” will zero in on such problems as white muscle disease, pre gnancy toxemia, hypo calcemia, and other dis orders associated with the lambing ewe. Increasingly restrictive FDA regulations and scrutiny make it imper ative that producers keep informed about approved preventive and treatment measures. The format will be interactive, with ample opportunity for ques tions and audience participation. Up-to-the-minute information concerning Green Valley Lamb, Pennsylvania lamb marketing cooperative, will also be available at this meeting. This promising new venture has been bom out of two years of intensive study, producer surveys, and market research by a committee appointed by the Pen nsylvania Sheep and Lamb Marketing Board. The goal is to provide a structure through which lamb producers can market lambs in a more advantageous and pro fitable manner than through the convention al system.
