Lebanon countians are familiar with the owners of the supreme champion dairy cow of the 1994 state Farm Show, since they’ve been showing Ayrshires at the county fair for several years. Shawn Hemley and his sister Heather Shearer showed their 5-year-old Ayrshire Jessica, a Canadian-bred animal which clas sified Very Good under the Cana dian system and was bred by Neil Kittle, of Ontario, who showed the animal during the breed show, while Shawn showed her during the juding for the supreme champion. Shawn and Heather had pur chased Jessica two years ago from Kittle and have been showing her. Not currently on test with the Dairy Herd Improvement Associa tion, her 2-year-old record in Canada was 14,000 pounds of milk. She freshened in September with a heifer calf and has been milking well. “It’s a terrific feeling,” Shawn said. “It shows that hard work and effort pays off sometimes. Thanks to a lot of people, I feel great.” Shawn and his wife Karen, have two daughters Merritt and Amber, and live at the home farm south of Fredericksburg, where they have 17 head of Ayrshire and a number of Holsteins. Accoring to Shawn, the family farm began keeping Ayrshires when Heather was starling in 4-H and got one for a project animal. He said she got the family enthused about the breed and she started showing and winning with her brown and while cows and showed a couple of junior division champions over the years. Heather married in May and lives in Bradford County on a dairy farm with her husband Steve, where they have his Holsteins and her Ayrshires, Shawn said. After the judges announced the Ayrshire supreme. Shawn said that while the five other breed grand champions, he really thought that Bemeta Gable’s grand champion Guernsey would have been selected as supreme. He said he didn’t actually expect it to be his Ayrshire. “But then I guess you are pickier about your own animals and can see more flaws than in someone Shawn Hernley smiles broadly while holding the halter of the supreme champion dairy cow of the state Farm Show.
