Phil son of Mercer, Pa., has elected to participate in the American Breed ers Service (ABS) progeny test (PT) program. In this program, the O-Be- Joyful Farm twill be working closely with their ABS Represen tative Paul Baxter, and using semen from young dairy bulls that are genetically tested by ABS. The ABS PT program is unique because it allows test herds to select which young bulls they would like to sample while also allowing them the option to have ABS send them semen from a non-specific young sire. The goal in either case is to have each progeny tested young sire receive a highly reliable sire summary at the conclusion of the testing period. Information gathered from the O-Be-Joyful Farm herd will be used to develop Review Board Approves York Farms YORK (York Co.) On November 18, four more York County farms, totaling 1,211 acres, were approved by the Pennsylvania Ag Land Review Board. The York County Ag Preserve Board, which administrates the ag conservation easement program, announced that upon settlement of these four farms, in ear ly 1994, the York Coun ty Conservation Ease ment Program will have preserved 20 farms, to taling 5,731 acres. On Wednesday, De cember 1, at 7 p.m. in the York County Voca tional Technical School Auditorium, the York County Agricultural Land Preserve Board will hold its annual in formational public meeting to explain the application require ments of the Conserva tion Easement Program. The management of the PT herd affects the quality of the data ABS receives. ABS relies on PT herds for accurate animal iden tification and official DHIA records. After receiving this accurate data, the O-Be-Joyful Farm will receive benefit payments from ABS for each PT calf bom, and again for each PT-sired daughter included on the sire’s second USDA summary.
