MERCER (Mercer Co.)
David Anderson, 17, Mercer was
named Outstanding 4-H Boy and
Samantha Reis, 16, Greenville was
named Outstanding 4-H Girl at the
Mercer 4-H Achievement Night
Awards recently at the Mercer
County Cooperative Extension
Mercer 4-H members were hon
ored for service to the various
county 4-H clubs, according to
Beth Lair, 4-H extension agent
David is the son of Kenneth and
Karen Anderson, Mercer. The
Mercer Area High School senior
has been involved in 4-H for 11
years (he joined in the Tag-Along
program before it ended, accord
ing to Lair), and has extensive
experience in wood science. Some
of the work he docs in the 4-H also
helped him gamer recent Eagle
Samantha is the daughter of
Jacob and Joyce Reis, Greenville.
The Greenville Area High School
senior has been involved in 4-H for
Somerset 4-H Horse Show
Somerset County 4-H horse members received 10
awards at the 34th annual state 4-H Horse Show held
recently at the State Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg.
County winners in 4-H performance classes were Bobbi
Darr, 3rd place pleasure driving; Jessica Darr, 3rd place
draft horse single cart and Bth place western pleasure
horses (over 14.0 hands, jr. rider); Mindy Davidhizar, 9th
place saddle type pleasure ponies; Amanda Decker, 2nd
place draft horse single cart; Cherie Green, Bth place hunt
er seat equitation (overjumps) Sr. Division; Scott Norris,
7th place, saddle seat equitation Sr. Division; and Cindi
Strelko, 10th place, clover leaf barrel race pony.
In 4-H horse production classes, members breed and
raise their own project animal. Local winners were Bobbi
Darr and Amanda Decker.
More than 900 winners in county and district competi
tions vied for awards. Somerset County had 10 4-H’ers
entered in the competition. Events tested skills in show
manship, equitation, pleasure, jumping, driving and timed

Calvert sheep to Lisa Friedman,
swine to Jason Crawford, horse to
Beckie Kerins, goat to Marsha
Chess, and small animal and poul
try to Tonya Lurtz. The Outstand
ing Ag Book Award, which
includes a $lOO savings bond
sponosred by Penn West Farm
Credit went to Marsha Chess.
Project Book Awards went to
the following: horse performance,
junior division, to Bryda Zahniser;
horse performance, senior divi
sion, to Beckie Kerins; home eco
nomics, junior division, to Emily
Drew; home economics, senior
division, to Allison Bestwick; per
sonal development to Crystal
Flynn; and natural resources to
Roundup highlight awards
including the theme contest win
ner, Erin Snyder, for H 4-H Step
ping Toward the Future.” 4-H
Olympics overall winning clubs,
gold went to Sega Neet, silver to
Fredonia Outdoor Explorers, and
bronze to The Daisy Dukes.
Roundup club exhibits, project
category, first to Country Milkers,
second to Crafty Kids, and third to
Makers and Bakers. An honorable
mention went to Leaping Kids.
Theme category, first to Nimble
Thimbles, second to Wildlife
Explorers, and third to Baby Beef
and Lamb. Honorable mentions
went to Country Kids, The Piggies,
and The Trendsetters.
The Good Housekeeping Award
and Clean Up Contest Award went
to Cottontail Friends.
