Local 4-H’ers
Take District Honors
Beverly Miller, of Scotland,
will represent Franklin County
4-H Horse and Pony clubs in state
competition in October as a result
of recent wins at the district level
in August
Miller, 16, took took fust place
iribbons in two classes at the dis
trict production show in Shippens
burg. Her first place win with her
3-year-old filly, Mschievous Crit
ter, in the English Pleasure class
made her the sole qualifier from
the eight-county District VI for
state competition. She also took a
first in the weanling filly pony of
the Americas class showing Crit
ter’s Silver Rose.
Miller also won five ribbons in
the performance show in district
competition in Lebanon. Her wins
included a third in reining, fourths
in pony trail, western pleasure
ponies and pony keyhole, and a '
seventh in senior showmanship
and grooming. 4

Champion fitter/showman was
Justine Sassaman. Also participat
ing in the fitter/showmanship clas
ses were Maggie Chronister and
Kim Funt
Justine Sassaman had the
champion Dorset ewe, champion
crossbred ram, and champion and
reserve champion crossbred ewes.
Maggie Chronister showed the
champion Romney ewe, champ
ion and reserve champion Sulfolk
ewes, and placed first with a pair
of yearling ewe lambs.
Kim Funt had a second place
crossbred ewe.
Berks “Outstanding” 4-H’er
Berks County 4-H member
Debra Beck, Hamburg, was the
recipient of the 1993 “Outstanding
Collegiate 4-H Award” at Penn
State University.
Debra was selected for the
annual award by her peers and ag
and extension education facility
members. The award recognizes
members who exhibit outstanding
leadership and citizenship
qualities.
Debra was a member of a colle
giate 4-H’team that provided very
active leadership to the Communi
ty Action Project (CAP) funded
by'Metropolitan Life Company
through the National 4-H Council
in order to promote citizenship

more than 300 youth and adults.
Debra has been a part of Berks
4-H for thepast 10 years, focusing
her projects primarily in swine
and leadership. She has also
served as a camp counselor at the
resident 4-H camp program for the
past six years.

wood High School and is a sopho
more at Penn State University.
September Horse Club
Meeting Held
Vice President Nathan Stoltzfus
called the September meeting of
the Boots and Saddles 4-H to or
der at the Farm and Home center,
Lancaster. Pledges were led by
Lori Hockenberry and Megan
Blitz. There were 38 members in
attendance.
Congratulations to Jennifer
Goodman, Allison Eberly, and
Nathan Stoltzfus who placed to
show at the State Show Harrisburg
Farm Show Complex, October
29-31. September 12 at Walnut
Hill Stables was the final Boots
and Saddles show of the season.

cipated.
Future events scheduled it the
September meeting included a
club trail ride, and the annual re
cognition banquet in November.

about Warmblood horses.
Hunterdon County NJ. 4-H
will be hosting its annual 4-H Fall
Festival on Sunday, October 17.
The event is being held at the
End of the Lane Farm on Route
31, Flemington (across from the
Flemington Fairgrounds) from
noon until 4 p.m. Admission is
free.
There will be wagon rides, 4-H
exhibits, demonstrations, games,
and a food booth sponsored by the
4-H Leaders Assocation.
The purpose of this event is to
introduce 4-H to the community,
and encourage participation in the
program.

new 4-H club, or simply learning
more about the Hunterdon County
NJ. 4-H program, this event is for
