Proper Pruning Helps Prime Gardeners
LANCASTER (Lancaster Co.)
This autumn Penn State Co
operative Extension and Penn
State-The Lancaster Center have
teamed up to offer two personal
enrichment courses on gardening.
The first is Pruning Ornamental
Plants. This course will promote
the appreciation of a well-main
tained- landscape through proper
pruning techniques. Participants
will leant about the selection and
care of pruning equipment, and
the proper methods of pruning de
cisuous shrubs and trees, needled
evergreen shrubs and trees, broad
leaved evergreens, and hedges.
The first three classes will con
sist of lecture and hands-on de
monstrations of pruning on the

H ARRISBURQ (Dauphin Co.) —The Keystone Inter
national Livestock Exposition is in its 37th year at Harris
burg. The Exposition is recognized nationally as a show
case for the nation’s top beef cattle, swine, sheep, and
horses. It will be held at the Farm Show Complex in Har
risburg on September 30-October 4, 1993.
An expanded Wool Show has been planned this year
with Bob Calvert of Mercer, PA serving as chairman. The
purpose of this show is to encourage the production of
better wool, to promote proper handling, grading and pre-

techniques. While at Longwood,
we will observe all the previous
types of pruning techniques dis
cussed in class and also the fol
lowing; topiary, espalier, vines,
and bonsai.
The course is on four consecu
tive Tuesday afternoon, October
19, 26, and November 2 and 9
from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Cost is $BO.
The second course is Selecting
Plants with Winter Interest This
course will explore the potential
of the winter garden. For many
people, after the first frost, all gar-

The course will consist of a
two-hour lecture and one-hour
walking tour on the grounds of the
Penn Slate Lancaster Center and
surrounding Greenfield Industrial

on Monday, November 1, from 1
p.m. to 4 p.m. Cost is $25.

may enter fleeces in the competition. The judging will
take place on Friday, October 1 at 2:00 p.m. The fleeces
shall be tied with paper twine, flesh side out, in a manner
to allow their being handled without falling apart.

The fifteenth annual Union Coun
ty 4-H and FFA Junior Livestock
Sale was held at the West End
Fairgrounds recently.
The sale grossed more than
$23,800 for Union County 4-H
and FFA members. The sale con
sisted of six market steers, 40
lambs, 23 hogs, and 10 meat pens
of three rabbits.
