Sarah, ‘Sandy’ Stride To Lancaster Hog Championship ANDY ANDREWS Lancaster Farming Staff MANHEIM (Lancaster Co.) Sarah Boyd, 12, daughter of Kerry and Deb Boyd, Clay, strode to a grand championship at the Lancas ter County 4-H Hog Show Wed nesday with her 254-pound Hampshire/Duroc cross' called “Sandy.* ’ Reserve champion of the show was awarded to Kevin Pfaulz, 10, son of Rick and Sue Pfautz, Hphra ta. Kevin showed his 226-pound crossbred hog. The grand champion hog, from the heavyweight class, was pur chased at the sale for $2.25 a pound from Hatfield Quality Meats, for a total of $571.50. The reserve champion, from the lightweight class, sold for $1.50 a pound to Hatfield Quality Meats, for a total of $339. The reserve heavyweight champion, shown by Nathan Kreidcr, Elizabethtown, sold to Ezra H. Good for $1.20 a pound. Champion light heavyweight, exhibited by Sarah Boyd, sold for $1 a pound to Willie the Butcher. Hatfield Quality Meats purchased Gerald Boyd’s champion medium weight hog for 7S cents a pound. Willie the Butcher purchased Ger ald’s reserve champion light heavyweight for 7S cents a pound, and Kevin Pfautz’s reserve champ ion mediumweight for 75 cents a pound. The reserve champion lightweight, shown by Nathan Hoover, was sold to Pro Genetics for 90 cents a pound. The grand champion hog is a lineal descendant of the overall reserve at last year’s Southeast Hog Derby, and was picked from a Strauss Brothers herd in Ephrata, according to Sarah’s father, Kerry. Sarah, who attends Ephrata Middle School, also picked up light heavyweight champion with a 250-pound hog. Kerry said that Sarah’s brother, Gerald, was awarded champion mediumweight hog and reserve champion light heavyweight. Ger ald and Sarah share equal responsi bilities tending their SO head of hogs.
