UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre Co.) New warning signs designed to promote safety on farms and other agricultural oper ations are now available. The five signs alert farm work ers to potential hazards of manure storages, fires in oxygen-limiting silos, pesticide storage areas and pesticide-treated fields or facili ties, says Dr. Dennis Murphy, pro fessor of agricultural engineering. One new sign is designed to be placed at each entrance to below ground or covered manure stor ages. “This sign has a simple graphic depicting a person being overcome by deadly manure gases,” Murphy said. “You get the point even before you read the words, which warn you to enter the pit only with a self-contained air supply, ventilation, rescue har ness and someone standing by with a mechanical lifting device.” Another sign points out the drowning hazards of uncovered manure storages and ponds. The graphic shows a figure falling through the crusted surface of a manure pond. Farmers with sealed or oxygen limiting silos can buy signs indi cating the explosion hazards using water to fight fires in these struc tures. One sign is meant to be placed at ground level near the silo blower pipe ladder, while a second should be placed next to the silo unloader. “The two remaining signs address pesticide safety con cerns,” said Murphy. “One is designed to be posted at each entrance to a facility or field where pesticides with re-entry restrictions have recently been applied. Because this sign will be used at fields and facilities such as • Agricultural • Commercial • Residential Beef Operation Featuring 8’ Deep Manure Storage System With Waffle Slats • Retaining Walls • Bunker Silos • Manure Storage, Etc. rm mmimmm wmx WEofflemTl®™ CONCRBTE SYSTEM * Sizes And Layouts To Your Speclftoettons WsWork rtprw TO* Customer IMUVIBGIrViT' „ Farm Safety Warning Signs Available mushroom houses, which employ many Hispanic workers, its warn ings are in both English and Spanish.” The final sign, to be placed at each entrance to pesticide storage Reserve champion hog.
