On Jtily 31. 1790. the U S government issued its first patent,
granted to Samuel Hopkins of Vermont, for a process of
making potash and pearl ashes Signed by President
George Washington. Secretary of Slate Thomas Jefferson
and Attorney General Edmund Randolph, the patent was
one of only three granted that year It was not until May 1802
that the Patent Office was organized as a distinct entity "to
have' charge of the issuing of patents," and consecutive num
bering was not instituted until 183 ft By 1833 about 9.000
patents had been issued and the Superintendent felt it was
lime for him to resign since "everything seems to have been
done “ Ot course, the Office continued and has now issued
over -15 million patents
