Somerset County 4-H Foods Revue Forty-eight 4-H members com peted Wednesday, June 16, in the 1993 4-H Foods Revue Contest. This is the 22nd year for this competition in Somerset County. The purpose for this part of the 4-H foods and nutrition program is to help4-H’ers apply nutritional information in preparing a meal as well as developing talents of graceful entertaining. The overall category for this year’s competition was the “Milk and Dairy Products” foods group. The club meets the second Thursday of every month at the Dauphin County Agricultural Building on Peter Mountain Road. The meetings begin with a train ing session followed by a business meeting. At the end of the meet ing, refreshments are served. Besides these regular meetings, the Puppy Club also holds special outings. Some of these outings include hospital visits, mall walks, demonstrations, and other places which help socialize the puppies. The 4-H’ers also individually take their puppies to church, stores, restaurants, and malls. There are currently six puppies in the club. Their names are Gar bo, Hank. Vasco, Yori, Lewis, and Jamie. The club is also getting several new puppies in the upcom ing 'weeks. The club receives the puppies when they are two months old and returns them when they are approximately sixteen months old. Puppies range in size from 25 pounds to 80 pounds. The breeds used are German shepherds, Labrador retrievers, and Golden retrievers. In August, the club will be attending the Dauphin County 4-H Fair being held at the Farm Show. This is a competition between 4-H’ers. Details about these outings will be given at the next meeting. During the last weekend of June, Seeing Eye puppy raisers and their puppies from Pennsylva nia and Delaware attended Flippy Camp. This is a time for 4-Hers to meet new people and puppies, make crafts, play games, and socialize their puppies. Everyone who attended remarked of the wonderful experiences shared by In the past few months, the members and puppies of the Lebanon 4-H Extra Special Puppy Club did many exciting activities. They went on a mall walk, a bus trip, and library informa tion visits to Lebanon, Fredericksburg, and Myerstown. Additionally, several members attended a teen leader meet ing in Lancaster and Puppy Camp at French Creek Stale Park. Two members attended 4-H Camp at Hickory Run Stale Park. Five members presented at the Lebanon County Pre sentation Night, where they received blue ribbons. One member completed a sewing project and participated in dress revue. The Lebanon County Fair will find members exhibiting puppies, sheep, ceramic pieces, puppy and wildlife posters, sewing projects, and more. Future activities include Region al Presentation Night, a visit of the pups to a Bible, school, and an ice cream social for the club roundup. Children from the age of nine and adults are invited to join 4-H Seeing Eye Puppy Clubs and raise a Golden Retriever, Labrador, or German Shepherd. Contact your county 4-H agent for more information. The York County Kiddn’ Around Goat Club’s July meet ing was held July 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the York County 4-H Center. The American Pledge was led by Ricky Lybarger and the 4-H pledge led by Raymond Newlin. The roll call was taken by Joel Everly. The club discussed upcoming goat shows and signed up for' 4-H Olympics. Those attending who received awards were Shanna Daugherty, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Geoffrey Daugherty, who received a gold award in meats judging; LeAnn Gra ham. daughter of Glenn Graham, who received a bronze award in the dairy judging contest; and Tracey Willwert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Willwert, who received a bronze award in horse judging. Other students attending were Regina Shelton, daughter of Cindy Spangler, who participated in the dairy judging contest and Joseph Strayer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Stray er. who also participated in the dairy judging contest. Also attending the convention was former National FFA officer Marty Coates. He presented a leadership workshop on goal setting and was the featured speaker at the first ses sion of the convention. The featured speaker at the second session of the convention was former Pennsylvania officer Andy Rill. The students were accompanied to the annual statewide event, which is sponsored by the Pennsylvania* Department of Vocational Education and Penn State’s Department, of Agricultural and Extension Education, by Guy W. Naugle, Jr., agricultural education instructor. Lancaster Farming, Saturday, July 24, 1993-821 On June 26, Katy Yingst parti cipated in a very special event. She was chosen out of all the pup py raisers in New Jersey, Dela ware, and Pennsylvania to enter the Mickey Mouse Club Hall of Fame. Katy and her puppy Jamie spent all day Saturday getting filmed for an episode that will appear on the Mickey Mouse Club. The program will be aired sometime in September. Katy and - Jamie also received a Mickey Mouse Club Hall of Fame trophy.
