The Maryland State Fair is an educational resource complete with daily exhibits and demonstra tions which are sure to capitvate visitors of all ages. Fairgoers are invited to explore the Farm & Gar den, 4-H, and Home Arts Build ings, the Cow Palace, Horse Show Ring, and other agricultural build ings and displays as well as the Exhibition Hall. The State Fair is the culmina tion of more than a year’s worth of hard work for 4-H members who will compete in shows and demonstrations throughout the fair. The 4-H Livestock Show will begin Saturday, August 28 and run through Wednesday, September 1. The 4-H/FFA Livestock Sale will begin Wednesday, September 1, at 6 p.m. in the Cow Palace. The Open Class Livestock Show will open Thursday, September 2, and run through Labor Day. The Midway will provide thrills and chills for the entire family with more than 30 rides. “Kiddie Land” will offer tame but exciting rides, and the Midway promises to thrill even the bravest fairgoer. A wide selection of food will satisfy the spirit as well as the palate. Fairgoers will have the opportunity to enjoy the delightful taste of com dogs and cotton can dy, or the traditional flavor of crab cakes, rib-eye steak sandwiches, fruits, ice cream, and other pro ducts fresh from Maryland farms. For wildlife lovers, the State Fair Park will not only provide picnickers plenty of tables and shade, but a chance to see owls, snakes, turtles and other wildlife provided by the Department of Natural Resources. There will be a variety of live entertainment on the Midway and Grandstand stages including the celebrity talent show. The Race Track will offer daily horse races, with additional races on Saturday and Labor Day. New Rabies Requirement At The Fair The New York State Fair has instituted a new vaccination requirement for the exhibition of many livestock in 1993. All dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep and horses exhibited at The New York State Fair this year must first be vaccinated for rabies nr the animal will not be accepted. These species of livestock must be vaccinated at least 21 days before the opening day of the fair, which is August 26. To be exhibited at the State Fair, the animals must be vaccinated no later than August 4, or the animals will not be accepted. Proof will be required that all dairy and beef animals, sheep, or horses have been vaccinated before they will be allowed to enter the grounds. Exhibitors should have their veterinarian add a statement to the health certifi cate stating that the animal has been immunized against rabies. The statement should include the date of immunization and state the type of vaccine used. Owners of horses should ask their veterinarian to provide a statement that the horse has been vaccinated for rabies. The state ment should include the date of vaccination, the type of vaccine used, and the name of the horse. Attaching a photocopy of the Cog gins test certificate will provide positive identification of the ani mal. Horses from out-of-state may have the veterinarian add this information to the intra-state health certificate. The requirement applies only to dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep and horses, in both open and 4-H clas ses. Holstein Featured Breed At Montgomery County Agriculture Fair Holsteins will be the featured dairy breed at the 451 h annual Montgomery County. Md. Agri cultural Fair Aug. 20-28 here at the county fairgrounds. Each year the fair honors one or two of the six dairy breeds and of fers to its exhibitors an increase in the premiums paid. For instance, Holstein exhibitors winning first place at this year’s fair will re ceive $lOO in premiums. Other breed first place winners will re ceive $5O. Holsteins are easily identified by their black and white haircoats. Special awards to be given dur ing the open class Holstein show include a trophy presented to the exhibitor of the best Montgomery County bred and owned Holstein female presented by the Mont gomery County Holstein Associa tion, a perpetual trophy donated by Irvington Farm for the best three Holstein females bred and owned by an exhibitor in memory of Paul B. Misner, and an award to the grand champion Holstein fe male presented by Barbara John son in memory of Donald “Duck” Johnson. The Holstein show begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, in the cattle show pavilion with Norman Hill of Woodbine serving as judge. Tree Growers Host Show BLOOMSBURG (Columbia Co.) The 48th annual Pennsyl vania Christmas Tree Growers Association’s (PCTGA) Summer Meeting and Trade Show is sche duled Aug. 5-7. Host farms are Abraczinskas Nurseries, Catawis sa, and Green Horizon Farms, Bloomsburg. Field demonstrations and tours will be featured, along with a spe cial seminar in insect and disease control. The program begins on Thursday, Aug. 5, with a reception and industry trade show from 5 p.m.-lO p.m. at the Danville Days Inn, Danville, Exit 33 off 1-80.
