It seems that food rules my life.
So much of my time is spent plan
ning to grow, harvest, preserve
and use food. And, don’t forget all
of that weeding.
Come March and April, my gar
den must be planted! It is a habit
for the past forty years. Then all
during the summer we harvest the
vegetables and berries. I keep a
record of how many quarts are fro
zen or canned and then mark them
off when they’re used. During the
day I like this kind of work but
when night has come and I still
have buckets of beans or whatever
to tend, then I become grouchy. I
too would like the newspaper or
watch television before bedtime.
Someday, we shall have to
change our usual ways and plant
less of everything. People say to
us, “What do you do with every
thing?” Well, we eat a lot of it and
give our children some when they
visit
Preparation of meals does take
time but I enjoy that kind of work.
We raise a lot of potatoes and used
five or more bushels last year.
They are easy to prepare as no
recipe is needed to make them a

half-dozen different ways. Even
meat often needs no specific
instructions as I’ve made it so
often.
Now desserts are in a different
category and one teaspoon or one
tablespoon would make a big dif
ference in the end product. And, as
we have two desserts with every
meal, there is a big collection of
dessert recipes in my little black
notebook. This morning I plan to
make an apple pie and a cherry
pie.
Most of our children have gar
dens too and grow some of their
food. I often think that the majori
ty of people do not realize the
work behind the rows of fruits and
vegetables that they see in their
supermarkets. What would they
do if the shelves were empty? It
would not make any difference to
me oh yes, I would miss those
big carrots as mine grow much
smaller.
