ITHACA, N.Y. Executive manager of the New York Hol stein Association. Hugh Suther land has announced his retirement effective July 15, 1993. Sutherland’s responsibilities have been to plan and execute pro grams of the state breed organiza tion, which include shows, sales, educational meetings, and cattle merchandising. He has carried out these duties for IS years. Prior to becoming executive manager, he served the associa tion at the local and state level through involvement on various committees, including a term as state president from 1975-76. He has also been involved in numer ous other agricultural and com munity organizations over the years. Sutherland graduated from SUNY Delhi in 1950 with his A.A.S. degree in animal husban dry. Upon graduation, he accepted a position as assistant herdsman for the Beacon Dairy Research Farm in Cayuga, N.Y. He worked with such outstand ing herds as Miller Acres Farm, Billings, N.Y.; Maraview Farm, Uradtadag Maestro"'. Marathon, N.Y.; and Ed Don George, North Java. N.Y. He also served in the U.S. Army from 1955-57. From 1957 to 1982, Sutherland owned Chapel Bank Farm, Delhi. N.Y. The herd was well recogniz ed and highly respected, with more than 30 bulls from the herd entered A.I. organizations, numer ous cattle exported to several for eign countries, and an aggressive merchandising program which was developed and maintained. The Chapel Bank, Delhi, milk ing herd was sold in the spring of 1978, with heifers being retained to form a nucleus for a continued Chapel Bank herd. In 1982, Sutherland became a partner in the development of the Chapel Bank, Hobart, registered Holstein herd. A son, David, has now taken over the farm. Hugh and his wife, Irene, have four children, including sons John and David; daughters Sharon and Diane; and three grandchildren. Of those applications, specifi cally, the Hallstead System under the Northeast District of Pennsylvania-American Water Company, seeks up to .35 million gallons per day from the water company’s Susquehanna Sytem, also within the company’s North east District; Dover Township, seeks to purchase up to 1 million gallons per day from the York Water Company; and Ashland Area Municipal Authority is seek ing to withdraw up to .8 million gallons per day from Ashland Reservoir, an impoundment of the Litde Mahanoy Creek, for its publ ic water supply, and also to purch ase up to .6 million gallons a day from Roaring Creek Water Com pany, of Schuylkill County.
