Amelia’s Outfit
Amelia Bloomer was a women's rights advocate and pub
lisher and editor of The Lilv, America's first periodical
edited entirely by a woman. But it was her involvement in
the dress reform movement for which she is best remem
ered. Stating that the hooped skirts of her day
were immodest, drafty, and cumbersome, she
simply refused to wear the popular fashion.
Her preferred costume was a pair of baggy
trousers, gathered at the ankles, with a short
belted tunic. When she appeared in such an
outfit to deliver a Fourth of July address in
1853, she created quite a sensation. Although
jther feminists of the day soon adopted this
style of dress, it was Mrs. Bloomer whose
name became forever associated with the pantaloons.
Ever since we wear clothes, we know not one
another.

EARTHWISE
Much of the destruction of
tropical rainforests is due
to developed countries’
demand for exotic woods like
teak and mahogany. The
