But it was her involvement in the dress reform movement for which she is best remem ered. Stating that the hooped skirts of her day were immodest, drafty, and cumbersome, she simply refused to wear the popular fashion. Her preferred costume was a pair of baggy trousers, gathered at the ankles, with a short belted tunic. When she appeared in such an outfit to deliver a Fourth of July address in 1853, she created quite a sensation. Although jther feminists of the day soon adopted this style of dress, it was Mrs. Bloomer whose name became forever associated with the pantaloons.
