n 1 11 HAPPENINGS 4-H Horticulture Projects Open Registration Bucks County has open regis tration for two exciting 4-H horti culture projects. The Great Pumpkin Project and the Red, White and Blue Potato Project are designed for youth ages 8 to 19 to gain an appreciation of growing and harvesting pumpkins and/or potatoes. In the Great Pumpkin project, youth will receive several pump kin plants and seeds to grow and keep the records in a project book. In October, when harvest time comes, youth can participate in the pumpkin roundup held in conjunc tion with the Churchville Nature Center’s pumpkin weigh-in. Spe cial 4-H events such as largest pumpkin, best pumpkin recipe, best Jack-O-Lantem, and more will be offered for them to enter. The Red, White and Blue Pota to Project is a brand new offering. In August, youth can enter their project pota toes at the Middletown Grange Fair 4-H Roundup for judging. Growing colored potatoes adds an extra fun dimension to garden ing for young people. Youth will receive different colored potatoes and keep records of how they grow. A superb activity for young people to become involved with is gardening. Lancaster County 4-H Swine Club The Lancaster County 4-H Swine Club recently held their reorganizational meeting at the Lancaster Farm and Home Center. Many new members joined the club this year. There are 80 mem bers in the swine club, and many members in the club are on the meats and livestock judging team. Election of officers for the 1993 club year was held. The new offic ers are president Tracy Bollin ger; vice president Tina Umbrell; secretary Amy Bol linger, assistant Regina Landis: treasurer Mat Umbrell; assis tant Travis Donough; and News Reporters Gerald Boyd and Scott Stoltzfus. On March 23, new officers and leaders met to plan the agenda for the coming 4-H year. There will be two combined meetings with the other county livestock clubs, along with various educational meetings. Members will receive a news letter with all important dates for the coming year before the April meeting. One item of major importance that was decided was that all pigs to be pul on feed for the county roundup will have to be vaccinated for pseudorabies. Feeder pigs will also have to be blood tested negative for pseudo rabies within 30 days of the August show. The weight limits for the show were also changed to 210-270 pounds. 4-H Puppy Club The Lebanon 4-H Extra Special Puppy Club is off to a good start in 1993. At the January meeting, the fol lowing officers were elected: pres ident, Alice Smith; vice president, Amy Smith; secretary, Jenny Caputo; treasurer, Andrea Leuen berger, and news reporter, Ellen Leuenberger. A scrapbook committee was also formed. All officers attended an officer’s training workshop in March. These events and the monthly meetings helped expose the puppies to people and were fun. Several of the members also participated in a ceramics class led by Mary Kreiser of Fontana. Their work will be shown at the Leba non County Fair in July. Future activities include a bus ride and mall walk, a P.I.C.L.E. class, teen meeting, and puppy camp. Children from the age of nine and adults are invited to join 4-H Seeing Eye Puppy clubs and raise a Golden Retriever, Labrador, or German Shepherd. Contact your county 4-H agent for more information. May Horse Club Meeting President Lori Hamish called the May meeting of the Boots and Saddles 4-H club to order at the Farm and Home Lancaster. Melissa Meiskey and Samara Shuster-Edelson gave the pledges. There were 37 members in attendance. The fund raiser for the club has been decided. Candy bars will be sold for a dollar during June. Also in June, a skating party has been set up for members. The recent gymkana was a suc cess, and the club is looking for ward to another qualifying gymk ana in June. Recently, 18 members of the Lancaster County livestock clubs along with two coaches and vari ous parents headed to Penn State University for the annual spring livestock judging contest hosted by the Penn State Block and Bridle Club. The 18 members were broken into two teams of four each who participated in the junior advanced contest, while the other 10 mem bers participated in the junior beginner contest. All judges placed six total clas ses: two classes of beef, two clas ses of swine, and two classes of sheep. The junior advanced judges had to give three sets of oral reasons. While the advanced judges gave their reasons to officials; county livestock agent Chet Hughes took some of the junior beginners for a tour of some of the campus and livestock farms. Later in the aftemoont the final results were given. Gerald Boyd was awarded high individual hon ors in the junior beginner contest, high individual in beef judging, and second in swine judging in the junior beginner division. The Lan caster County junior advanced team of Tracy Bollinger, Travis Donough, Dale Livengood, and Lisa Reiff placed fourth as a team in sheep and fifth as a team in beef.
