Agricultural engineering involves the application of engi neering principles to agricultural and biological systems that arc of great concern to our society today. Career opportunities are in the areas of food and fiber production, food processing, and conservation management of land and water resources. Employment opportun ities for agricultural engineers are undoubtedly going to increase as the world populations continue to demand more abundant supplies of nutritious, high quality food as well as clean water and preserva tion of other natural resources. Students find the courses in agricultural engineering to be very interesting and stimulating. The curriculum provides thorough training in mathematics, physics, and the engineering sciences com mon to all engineering disciplines. In addition, students receive spe cialized training in biological and agricultural sciences. The courses in this major include food engi neering, design of mechanical and structural systems, environmental systems for plant and animal growth, computer controls, and natural resources management and utilization. All students are encouraged to become active members of the Penn Stale student branch of American Society of Agricultural Engineers in order to learn more about the profession. Agricultural engineering stu dents are eligible to participate in the co-op, a program for those stu dents who want to gain profession- a to farming al engineering experiences while they are continuing their studies. Co-op students alternate semesters between working as engineering trainees for a company or govern mental agency and taking classes at Penn State. The first semester of work is generally the spring semester of the junior year. After working one semester, the co-op student returns to campus for one semester and then returns to work for the follow ing semester. This pattern is con tinued until the co-op student has earned one year of professional engineering experiences by the time of graduation. Graduates are employed as soil and water conservation engineers, food engineers, structural engi neers, environmental control engi neers, and machinery engineers. Graduates arc also employed as engineering consultants. Agricul tural engineers work in various capacities in the areas of design. p*TENDED CONTROL m Tr*~ bioinsecticide's NewM-Jf* ° ste m slows unique CeUCap y M Tra k stays biotoxi" brea '^°o ng et to give you stronger, w ° c pß...even those reliable • r MM * MYCOGEN CORPORATION resistant to otn »iy| soo-745-7476 insecticides Lancaitor Farming, Saturday, May 22, 1993-Cl3 development, testing, research, management, applications, sales, education, and service.
