Grandin is assistant professor,
department of animal sciences, at
Colorado State University in Fort
Collins, Colo. She is international
ly known for her studies and
recommendations to many cattle
producers across the country.
Grandin will speak at the Expo
about the “nuts and bolts’* of ani
mal handling, including how much
personal space to give cattle,
knowing their flight zone, and
knowing how quickly and inex
pensively producers can help solve
some of the problems that plague
the cattle industry.
“ One of the first things produc
ers can do is get rid of slippery
floors,” Grandin told Lancaster
Farming. Abo. producers should

stockyards to understand the fun
damentals of animal behavior.
A large part of what she’ll
address, she said, is bull safety.
Many of the problems dairy pro
ducers face is how to handle bulls,
according to Grandin. For many
beef producers, bulls are weaned
with their mothers. But dairy bulls
many times aren’t, and could pose
real problems in handling in the
yard.
In the past, her presentations
have helped many producers
across the nation benefit, and
Grandin said she has heard com
ments from producers that have
achieved results.
Dairy producers can save up to
10 minutes off the milking time if
they just take a few extra steps in
preparing the cow, according to
Dr. Michael J. Gamroth, associate
professor of animal sciences and
extension dairy specialist at Ore-

will share his experiences in gener
al milking parlor design and man
agement at the Expo.
Milking parlor design perfor
mance and management work
hand-in-hand, according to Gam
roth. He said that, overall, a clean
versus dirty parlor will contribute
roughly IS percent more milk to
the tank. He will discus optimal
management of the herring bone
and parallel type of parlors.
Some of the findings relate to
studies in the mid-1980s which
reflect what kinds of management
techniques are necessary depend-

But many of the techniques
Gamroth will demonstrate come as
a result of what is learned at the
milking schools conducted yearly
by the Oregon Sate extension
offices. The schools, which run
over two days, show herd owners
and employees the proper proce
dures before milking. The schools
also explain what the somatic cell
cofint is, how mastitis originates,
and how to properly treat and man
age related herd health problems.
“The schools explain more the
’why’ of things rather than the
‘how,’” said Gamroth.
