Richard Troutman, chairman of the Berks County ASC Commit tee, said cost-share funds are cur rently available under the Forestry Incentive Program (FIP) to assist fanners in planting trees. Troutman said the FIP helps increase the nation’s supply of timber products by encouraging private, non-industrial forest land owners to plant trees on suitable open lands or cut-over areas, and to perform timber stand improve ment work for production of limber. “Cost-sharing is generally necessary because landowners often cannot afford to make the long-term investment needed to produce crops of timber, he said. Tree planting and timber stand improvements are two of the major practices offered in desig nated counties. Troutman said farmers could save thousands of tons of top soil over the next several years by planting trees on idle and marginal cropland, and on other critically eroded areas. Trees protect the soil, reduce sediment in streams, and increase the value of the land. Farmers should contact the loc al ASCS office to request cost sharing funds for tree planting.
