    Scientist Named
COLLEGE PARK, Md. Dr.
Thomas J. Sexton will become
acting director of the Maryland
Agricultural Experiment Station
(MAES) for a six-month term
effective April 19, according to
Dr. Raymond J. Miller, president
of the Maryland Institute for Agri
culture and Natural Resources
(MIANR).
“I am extremely pleased that
Tom has agreed to serve as acting
MAES director,” said Miller. “He
is a distinguished avian scientist
and administrator whose expertise
will benefit MAES and its many
efforts on behalf of Maryland
agriculture and natural resources.”
Sexton, SO, replaces Interim
MAES Director Dr. Bryan H.
Johnson. Johnson, who became
interim director on Aug. 1, 1992,
became animal sciences depart
ment chair at Texas A & M Uni
versity in College Station, Texas.

Acting Director
and Poultry Sciences Institute at
the U.S. Department of Agricul
ture’s Beltsville Agricultural
Research Center (BARC), Sexton
received his doctorate in repro
ductive physiology from The Pen
nsylvania State University. A
native of Mount Holly, N.J., he
received his master’s degree in
animal science from the Universi
ty of New Hampshire.
Sexton began his career at
BARC in 1971 as a research phys
iologist in the Animal Science
Institute’s Avian Physiology
Laboratory and became research
leader of the laboratory in 1978.
He has been director of the Ani
mal Science Institute the
largest animal research location
maintained by USDA’s Agricul
tural Research Service (ARS)
since 1988. In 1987, he was Dis
tinguished Scientist of the Year,
ARS’ highest recognition for
research achievement.

Holstein Association Announces
Convention Schedule
BRATTLEBORO, VL The
1993 national Holstein convention
partial schedule was announced
this week by its headquarters
office in Vermont.
Set to be held at the Rochester
Convention Center, Rochester,
N.Y., from June 27 through June
30, the highlights inlcude an
excursion to Niagara Falls, farm
tours for early arrivals, a chuck
wagon chicken barbecue, and a
nation sale, according to a news
release this week from the Holstein
Association.
Two farm tours are set to start
early Sunday, June 27. One tour is
to focus on cow breeding programs
within three herds; the other tour is
1/2 quarts per acre with Foil BFC

The breeding tour is to visit the

630-cow herd, housed in a
515-stall bam; the Ransom Rail

ment, and the Vanslyke Dairy
which has a 26,000-pound milk
rolling herd average on 540 cows

planned to offer an excursion to
Niagara Falls. The tour bus is to
meander the historic lakeshorc
road of the Old Lake Iroquois
Indian. Trip stops scheduled arc at
the massive power station and
Goat Island Park, which offers
views of the American side of the
falls.
