They keep track of their yield and plant what’s best for them,” he said. They use hybrids from various seed companies. “The most important thing on that farm is timeliness,” Vanderau added. “All of that com was put in at the optimum com planting time, not too ear ly or too late. The same with their hay. They get it down ad in, in a few day’s time. They’re hard workers and they have the manpower to do it.” Each of the brothers has his own niche in the operation. Besides milking, Dave takes care of 48 heifers at his place, about a mile and a half away, and 47 more at a rented farm. Richard milks and shares record-keeping responsibilities with Mike. They all do field We Have Soybeans And Alfalfa! work, as does their father. Mike cares for the young stock and the fresh cows and does all the breeding. Calves are raised on elevated grates in the old stanchion bam adjacent to the main farm. Dry cows are taken there to freshen, then are milked there for a few days. “Very seldom does Mike lose a calf,” Richard said. Their grade herd is milked in a double six with six units.
