Russell Redding, execu tive assistant to United States Senator Harris Wofford, addressed the second annual meet ing of the Progressive Agriculture Organization (Pro Ag) recently at the Pink Apple. Redding congratulated the members of the Pro Ag for their sincere efforts in seeking a solu tion to the declining farm prices. Redding told the group the pre sence of Pro Ag’s activities are well known in Washington. D.C. Redding urges the members to keep informed on present prop osed trade agreements, because the agreements will have a long lasting effect on farm prices. John Pardoe, president of Pro Ag from Sullivan County, announced to the group that Pro Ag is cooperating with several farm organizations across the United States in supporting a new national dairy campaign. Pardoe said, Tm pleased to report that Pro Ag will be playing an impor tant roll in bringing unity among dairy farmers.” Arden Tewksbury, manager of Pro Ag, reported on recent meet ings that Pro Ag and several other farm organizations that were held in Washington D.C. with staff members of the Senate and House Agriculture committees. Tewksbury also reported on a meeting held in the New York State Grange Headquarters, where Pro Ag, New York State Grange, New York Farmers Union, and the New York Farm Alliance agreed on a position paper in support of the national dairy campaign John Tewksbury, chairman of the Resolutions Committee, pre . sented several resolutions to the delegates for their consideration. The delegates voted to stay neutral on the upcoming referen dum concerning the continuance of the National Dairy Board —the Dairy Board is funded by a man dated assessment on all dairy far mers. However, Pro Ag will urge Secretary of Agriculture Espy to send a ballot to all dairy farmers and not permit bloc voting by dairy co-ops on the National Dairy Board issue. The delegates also passed a resolution urging Pro Ag to work toward having the federal laws changed governing amendments to federal milk marketing orders. When amendments are proposed for a marketing order, producers must vote yes or no on what is called an amended order. Failure to pass the amended order results in the complete federal milk mark eting order to be thrown out. The Pro Ag delegates believe strongly that dairy farmers should have an opportunity to vote only on the proposed amendment without the threat of loosing the whole order. Lancaster Farming, Saturday, April 10,1993-D7 The delegates also passed a resolution urging Pro Ag to make tax reform a major issue in next year’s Pennsylvania gubernatorial election. The delegates felt the burden must be removed from real estate owners as being the princi ple method of funding local municipalities. Tewksbury reported that three years ago the voters of Pennsylva nia turned down a proposed tax reform bill. Tewksbury said the bill became so complicated that voters turned it down because of fear and misunderstanding. The proposed bill would have allowed school districts to reduce their real estate taxes by 43 percent. Tewks bury, who serves on the board of directors of the Elk Lake School District, said the Elk Lake Board was geared to reduce the real estate taxes by the full 43 percent if the reform bill had passed. Tewksbury said, “We will fol low the instructions of the dele gates and work diligently on a tax reform bill. No longer can the bur den be placed on retired people who are trying to hold on to their households, small business peo ple, and agriculture producers!” working as a sales representative.
