Under the theme, ‘Take Charge,” mem bers of the American Polled Here ford Association (APHA) con verged on the Lone Star State for their 70th National Polled Here ford Convention, Show and Sale. Activities were held recently at the Worthington Hotel and at the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show in Ft. Worth, Texas. APHA Membership Meeting A large crowd was on hand for the annual membership meeting that featured keynote speaker Dr. Bill Mies of Texas A&M Univer sity. Mies encouraged APHA members to take charge ol the quality of product they produce and to focus their sights on total quality management in order to keep beef competitive with other meats. Mies, a feedyard manage ment specialist at Texas A&M, has helped pave the way for the implementation of quality assur ance programs throughout the beef industry. Annual meeting activities also spotlighted the introduction of APHA’s Integrated Commercial Marketing Plan This program is designed to enhance tin marketing and to provide certification of Bal dy cattle to the commercial indus try with the formation of the American Baldy Beef Council. Glenkirk Farms, Maysville, Mo., was recognized during the meeting for registering 584 Polled Herefords, the greatnumber recorded with APHA in 1992. National Organization of Poll ettes Meeting The annual luncheon meeting ol the National Organization of Poll-eitcs the women’s auxiliary .to APHA, featured the recognition of outstanding members and the introduction of new board mem bers and officers. Becky Heaton of Murrayville, 111., was named the National Poll ette of the Year. First runner-up was Betsy Penn, Montgomery, Ala., and second runner-up was Beth Majchrzak, Easton, Md. New members of the National Organization’s board include Nancy Maurer, Aurora, Iowa; Pat Hicks, Cullman, Ala., and Marsha Farno, Eaton, Ohio. Loretta Owen, Lamar, Mo., and Virginia Halhom, Louisville, Miss., have joined the Board to fill unexpired terms. National Polled Hereford Queen Candidates from 16 states vied for the National Polled Hereford Queen title during the 70th National. Selected as the breed’s representative for 1993 was Jenny Hartzell of Redmond, Ore. The 19-year-old daughter of Richard and Mary Hartzell, Jenny is an active member of the Oregon Junior PHA and of the FFA. She is vice president of her junior breed association and holds the office of slate secretary for the Oregon FFA. Jenny has participated in sever al Polled Hereford Junior Nation als and attended PRIDE, APHA’s first junior leadership conference. She is currently an agriculture communications/agribusiness major at Linn-Benton Community College. Tanya Eckert, Ayr, N.D., was firstrunner-up in the queen com petition. The 18-year-old daughter of Daniel and Jessica Eckert, Tanya is studying child develop ment at North Dakota State Uni versity. Second runner-up was Sonja Jensen, Cottage Grove, Wis. Sonja is the 19-year-old daughter of Ellery and Margaret Jensen and is studying meat and animal science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Named Miss Congeniality was Tammy Fisher, Sonora, Texas. Tammy is the 18-year-old daughter of Glen and Linda Fisher and is in her fresh man year studying agricultural economics at Southwest Texas Junior College Plant Food Co. National exhibits were appraised by Jim Gillooly, Washington, Ind.; Levi Jackson, Sedley, Sask., and Gene Wiese, Manning, lowa. The 99-head bull competition was topped by international own ed WTK 55Y Bond 75A, a March 1991 son of WTK 80U Premium 55Y. Judges lined up 182 heifers and 11 cow-calf pairs in the National female show. Earning the overall champion female title was the junior division winner and champ ion heifer, JR LB Cashmere A 43, The March 1991 JCD NV Ascen dant Y 26 daughter is owned by junior member Joseph Jones, Fond du Lac, Wis. The overall reserve female title was won by the champion cow calf pair that included CLF Wise Girl Z5l, a 2-year-old BB MSU 15S Wisdom daughter, and her March 1992 bull calf sired by DR PlB3 Rebel 926 Y. The reserve champion cow-calf title was awarded to JR LB Big T Shimmer Z7B, a 2-year old GK LLB Rave daughter, and her May 1992 bull calf sired by Haroldson Raider PlB3 2Z. John E. Rice & Sons, Inc., sheridan, Wyo., share ownership in the pair with McMinn Ranches, Inc., Bur ton, Texas. In group competition, progeny of DR PlB3 Rebel 926 Y earned Star Lake the first place get-of sire award. Star Lake also exhi bited the winning best-six-head. Michigan State University, East Lansing, Mich., and McMinn Ranches, Inc., Burton, Texas, shared the premier exhibitor award, while Rice & Sons was recognized as the National’s pre mier breeder. Jones was presented with the new Exhibitor award. Activities at the 70th National also featured the annual Herdsman Banquet where Margarete Riffel of Enterprise, Kan., was honored by her peers as Herdsman of the Year. Riffel operates Plain View Farms with her parents, Don and LaDell Riffel, and her daughter, Tammy. National Sale Results A full house and active bidding set the stage for an upbeat sale that climaxed the Polled Hereford breed’s 70th National. Buyers rep resented 17 states and the coun tries of Argentina and Canada.
