N.Y. Dairy farmer Lewis Gardner of Galeton, has been re-elected president of Eastern Milk Producers Cooperative. Gardner was elected at the board of directors’ reorganization al meeting, following Eastern’s annual business and delegate meetings. Also elected were: • Timothy Bryant of Pawlet, VL, vice president. • Edwin Schoen of Phelps. N.Y., secretary. • George Mesick, South Scho dack, N.Y., treasurer. • Harold Bailey, Roaring Spring, assistant secretary treasurer. An eastern member for eight years. President Gardner was first elected to the board in 1987. He became vice president a year later, and then was elected to his first term as president in 1989. As pres ident, Gardner represents 3,100 farm families in nine states. As a member of the board, he also rep resents some 200 farmers in a dis trict that straddles the western por tions of New York and Pennsylvania. Gardner and his wife, Lois, pur chased their 100-acre Potter County farm in 1978. They milk (Closing bids: Thursday, Oct. 29) 45 cows out of a herd'of 90 Hols teins. Their sons, Lewis 111, 19, and Levi Earl, 16, help on the farm. A third son, Lee Thomas, 18, worked on the farm until entering the Marine Corps last month. VICE PRESIDENT BRYANT operates a 315-acre farm with a herd of 175 Holsteins, including 85 milking cows. He and his wife, Nancy, have three children, Laura Jean, 19, Timothy Jr., 18, and Robert Stephen, 14. Bryant repre sents some 200 farmers in a dis trict covering half of Vermont. Prior to joining Eastern’s board in 1984, he was president of North ern Farms Cooperative, which merged with Eastern. He has been vice president of Eastern since 1989. TREASURER MESICK begins his fourth term in that post First elected to the board in 1984, he represents about 200 farmers in a district that stretches from the St. Lawrence River, across the Mohawk Valley and into Massa chusetts. He operates an 800-acre farm, milking ISO Holsteins, in the southern end of Rensselaer County. He also is raising a small herd of buffalo. Mesick has lived and worked on the family farm all his life. SCHOEN begins his third term as secretary as well as his fourth full year as a director, representing aboat 200 farmers in Central New York, the Finger Lakes region and part of the Southern Tier. A mem ber of Eastern since 1970, Schoen milks 8S Holstein cows on a 400-acre farm. He and his wife, Jean, are also active in another business, Schoen-Wyffels Homes Inc., which markets log homes. The couple has three daughters (Heather, 24, Kari, 23, and Tricia, 20). BAILEY begins his third term as assistant secretary-treasurer. First elected to the board in 1988, Bailey represents some 200 far mers in a district stretching from central Pennsylvania into Mary land. An Eastern member since 1966, Bailey operates a 138-acre farm with his brother, Bernard, milking 90 cows out of a herd of 180 Holsteins, Bailey and his wife, Linda, have four children, Robert, 20; Diane, 19; Paul, 16, and Mark, 14.
