Montgomery County Dairy 4-H’ers Compete CREAMERY (Montgomery Co.) The Montgomery County 4-H Dairy Show was held recently at the Mont gomery County 4-H Center as part of the 4-H Fair. A total of 44 animals with all six major dairy breeds rep resented were exhibited by 18 members of the Montgom ery County 4-H Dairy Club. The dairy cattle were judged for type (body structure) and fitting (how well the animal is groomed). In addition, each 4-H’er was judged on their ability to show their bovine during the contest This year, a supreme champion of all six breeds was named at the show. Receiving top honors was Amy Plum mer of Chalfont who exhibited a junior 2-year-old Jersey. One gallon of milk from this Jersey was later auctioned off to the top bidder, Merrymead Farm, for $6OO as part of Montgomery County’s Market Animal Sale. Holsteins exhibited by Drew Sterner of Bechtelsville and Zachary Quigley of Lansdale were the Holstein grand champion and reserve, respectively. Grand and reserve grand champion for the 5 color breeds are as follows; Ayr shire, Seth Wolfgang of Bechtelsville; Brown Swiss, Jonathan and Katie Sterner of Bechtelsville; Guernsey, Rebecca Myers of Green Lane and Karen Wolfgang of Bechtelsville; Jersey, Amy and Paul Plummer of Chal font; Milking Shorthorn, Danielle Breaux of Salfordville. The fitting and showing portion of the dairy show was divided into two age groups, juniors ages of 8-13 and seniors ages 14-19. Zachary Quigley of Lansdale received junior fitting honors and Karen Wolfgang of Bechtelsville received reserve. Junior showman awards were won by Zach Quigley of Lansdale and Lizzie Moser of Gilberts ville. For the Senior 4-H ’ers, Paul and Amy Plummer won first and second place in the fitting contest, and Amy Plummer and Drew Sterner of Bechtelsville won first and second place in the showman contest. All blue ribbon animals were eligible for the Southeast ern District Dairy Show, with participants representing nine counties. Montgomery County 4-H’ers fared well at the district dairy show held August 21 at Kutztown. Ayr shire grand champion was exhibited by Seth Wolfgang. Brown Swiss reserve junior champion was exhibited by Jonathan Sterner. Jersey grand champion was exhibited by Amy Plummer and the reserve junior champion animal was exhibited by Paul Plummer. Ten Montgomery County 4-H’ers are eligible to com pete in the Pennsylvania Junior Dairy Show, which will be held Monday, September 21 at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. Eligible 4-Hers include Danielle Breaux, Rebecca Myers, Amy Plummer, Paul Plummer, Zachary Quigley, Drew Sterner, Jonathan Sterner, Katie Sterner, Karen Wolfgang, and Seth Wolfgang. All participants of the4-H dairy show were required to complete a project book for each animal. The 4-H dairy experience helps teach the basics in how to care for ani mals and the economics involved with raising dairy ani mals.
