Lancaster Arming, Saturday, September 5, 1992-B9
CLARION (Clarion Co.)
Thursday, July 30, was the date,
Penn State Ag Arena was the
place, and the “how to’s” of dairy
promotion was the topic. Sixty
five young dairy promoters and 23
adults gathered for the third annu
al “Mini Seminar” conducted by
Pennsylvania Dairy Princess and
Promotion Services, Inc. The
young people came from all cor
ners of the state-Erie County to
Bucks, Washington to Wyoming
and included three 4-H exchange
students from Japan and one from
Finland.
This one-day training session
was designed to acquaint some of
Pennsylvania’s younger dairy
enthusiants with the basics of
dairy promotion. Following an
introductory session in which each
participant had the opportunity to
introduce themselves and their
chaparone, the attending Dairy
Maids, Ambassadors, and Junior
Dairy Representatives were
divided into three groups. Each
group rotated to three 50-minute
workshops.
All the workshops were con
ducted by current or former Pen
nsylvania dairy royalty-young
women who have “been there
themselves” as local dairy promo
ters. This year’s leaders were;
reigning State Princess, Robin
Wilbur, and Alternates Tanya
Martin and Onalee Smith, who

conducted the session on “The
Basics”-Cows, Products, Industry
Facts, and Nutrition. Former State
Alternates Angela Spickler, 1989,
and Tammy Balthaser, 1988,
handled “My Image”-What to
Wear, What to do, and How to do
it. Kristin Metzker, 1990 Pennsyl
vania Princess, covered the “how
to’s” of imprompt speeches and
interviews in “Speaking and
Interviews-Fun not Fearsome”.
Concluding the program was a
general session for all with skits
and discussion by the leaders on
the “how not to’s” as well as the
“how to’s”! A session was also
held for the adults it which dairy
princess coordinators, Mim
Kauffman, Mary Herman, Wanda
Yoder, and program director, Jan
Harding, explained the Pennsylva
nia Diary Princess program and
the importance of the more recen
tly developed Diary Maid and
Ambassador program for younger
participants. This session pro
vided lime for questions and
answers on local promotion
efforts and an opportunity for
exchange of many ideas and
experiences.
A sandwich and salad luncheon
including milk and ice cream from
Penn Stale’s creamery was served
and each participant took home a
packet on dairy industry informa
tion and a dairy T-shirt.
