Newly crowned Pennsylvania Poultry Queen Melissa Dawn Yod er says she has something to sing about “two large eggs contain only 164 calories and there’s a 22 percent decrease in egg cholesterol.” That was the message Melissa told 225 people as she and two other contestants vied for the state title during the annual Lancaster County Poultry Queen Pageant held on August 7, at the Farm and Home Center. In a skit portraying Johann Sebastian Bach, Melissa, an accomplished pianist, played a minuet and talked about starting the day with eggs, which enables her to compose music all day long. Melissa did not pause long before she answered, “I would like to tell him that I want to live in a generation of peace.... I would tell him to cut the budget spending especially the nuclear war research, because I would like to live in a generation of peace.” In the final moments of the pageant, Melissa was chosen as the Pennsylvania-Poultry Queen. As queen, her job is to tweak the news to people across the state that including eggs and poultry in their daily diets is the nutritional thing to do. “I intend to do my best and enjoy it a lot,” she said. She won’t be’alone in her job of promoting the industry, for during the pageant, a county poultry queen and an alternate were also chosen to assist in promotion. Mary Sauder of Lititz, wears the Lancaster County Poultry Queen banner and Melissa Darlene Yoder of Mount Joy will serve as alternate queen to both the state and county queens. Melissa Dawn Yoder, the new state queen, is the 17-year-old daughter of Vernon and Barbara Yoder of Christiana. It’s on the family’s 150-acre farm that Melis sa gets plenty of hands-on experi ence caring for 20,000 broilers, 50 pigs, 120 stem, a dog, and 20 to “1800” cats. In the fall, Melissa will be a senior at Lancaster Mennonite High. She wants to be a music teacher, and has played the piano for more than 10 years.
