Even Greta, who has a deep fond ness for hats and was wearing a hot pink number, is at home with the animals. On weekends they also work around the farm. While Evelyn is a member of the Somerset County Dairy Prom otion Committee, she and Glenn have Hide time for outside activi lies beyond diose of their church. Much of their other time is allotted to activities of the children. Milk from the dairy is sold to the Maryland-Virginia Milk Pro ducers, Order Four, to whom their milk was sold even before they moved to Somerset County. They were satisfied and saw no reason to switch because of relocating. Vacations for the Moyers come at a premium, so last year when they took a “biggie” to Panama, it was something special. They went to visit old friends, Jacob and $.61; Light Vegetable Matter $.4475; Heavy Vegetable Matter $.4175; Natural Colored $.15; and Tags $.lO. This was the high bid of the five that were received for Mercer County wool. This is $.20 per pound higher than 1991 and one of the highest bids in the state for tied wool. The Tice Family was formerly from southern Somerset Co. They decided to sell their farm here and begin farming in Panama because of the cry there for more dairy far mers. A sensation was created, however, when Tice renovated an old city bus from Cumberland, Md., into a motor home for the long and grueling journey for his family, not to mention the possible dangers they might encounter along the way. An album has page after page of memorable photos from the trip showing fantastic flowers, steep hillsides with coffee plants, and many other colorful sights. Moyer said if his friend didn’t have irrigation, he’d be in trouble, because cattle grazing is a year round thing. But just getting to see, first hand, how dairying is done in the Central American country was a treat for Moyer. Oo you remember of hearing of barn painting of approximately 75 years ago that it stayed nice longer? lasted 25 years? Observation #1 In recent years many of these good old barn surfaces have been ruined by over coating, poor preparation and application, lack of controlled paint placement and film thickness. The time is coming to salvage our buildings (a) Start over (b) Water blast (c) RESURFACE (d) Use solid stain to penetrate on bare spots! (e) Second coat with a breathing film thickness (f) Brush out in all directions with finest of bristles. Really it is not as complicated as the recent changing regulations on clean milk production, or wet soils, or zoning. It Is also less expensive than other barn painting experiences! Observation *2 Colored water (latex) Is less desirable for farm buildings. There Is a tong list of reasons for this. Observation #3 Todays painted metal siding and roofing has a remarkably short life. Bad alloy or metal. There might be another list of reasons for this. To save It at reasonable coating cost - timing Is Important. Observation #4 Today's wood selection for sid ing etc. Is also poor. How about recycling build ing material?
