Both events took place at the farm in Lowellville, Ohio. Judging Contest Judging teams and individuals from Pennsylvani a, Ohio, New York, and Maryland evaluated seven classes, each con taining four animals. There were three classes of heifers and one On-Farm Composting Conference Precedes Lancaster Tour CHAMBERSBURG (Franklin Co.) An On-Farm Composting Conference will be held at the Penn State Harrisburg Campus, Middletown, on August 4. Techniques for on-farm com posting, economic considerations, regulations, and marketing com post will be some of the topics covered during the day. Cooperative efforts between municipalities and farms to com post yardwaste will also be discussed. Speakers will include Dr. Tho mas Richard from Cornell Univer sity, Leon Weber from the Rodale Research Center, and Dr. William Mitchell, professor emeritus at the University of Delaware. In the team competition, Washington County, Pa. won first place honors in both the junior and senior divisions. On the junior team were Jeanette Fidler of West Alexander, Crystal Hamilton of Prosperity, and Melissa and Darrin Lyle of Claysville. On the senior team were James Bane of Marian na, Heather Fidler of West Alexan der, Becky Hamilton of Prosperity. Panel discussions by farmers who are operating composting sites will be part of the confer ence. Cost is $lB per person, which includes lunch. On August 5, a tour will be con ducted of on-farm composting operations in Lancaster County. Tlie tour will include poultry man ure, poultry carcasses, and dairy manure composting sites. Cost for the tour is $l2 per per son, which includes bus transpor tation and lunch. In the senior division, second place was won by the Por tage County, Ohio team of the '‘Steakmasters” made up of Violet Bervish of Windham as well as James and Charles Campbell of Diamond. Third place honors went to the “Steakmasters’’ of Portage County Ohio in the junior division and the Mahoning County team in the senior division. In the individual competition, Nick DeChristofaro of Vienna, Ohio, won the blue ribbon in the junior division as did Becky Hamilton of Prosperity, Pa. in the senior division. Second and third places in the junior division were won by Renee Clevcrsy of Paines ville, Ohio and Darrin Lyle of Claysville, Pa., respectively. Club Lamb Sale At the Yeo Farms Club Lamb Sale that afternoon, 45 club lambs were sold at an average price over $lO7, up more than 14 percent from the previous year. Repre sented at the sale were buyers from Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, West Virginia, and Michigan. The highest selling lamb went to the DeChristofaro family of Vienna, Ohio for $3OO. The sale featured lambs out of a specially chosen wether sire, “Double-Wide,” owned jointly by Yeo Farms and Yellow Rose Sheep Company of Beaver, Pa. Of the 45 lambs sold, 32 were con signed by Yeo Farms and 13 by Yellow Rose. Club lambs are used by mem bers of 4-H and FFA clubs to com pete in shows at county and state fairs. Larry Garner, of Carrolton, Ohio, served as auctioneer. Moor man’s Manufacturing Company contributed bags of feed for door prizes at the sale.
