The largest crowd ever for the Pennsylvania Holstein Associ ation’s Showcase Sale filled the Penn Stale University Ag Arena April 4 and watched as 182 head were sold for a total of $346,500. The top selling animal was a Blackstar daughter consigned by Vaneta Syndicate of Roaring Branch. Andrew Stoltzfus, of Mor gantown, purchased the 3-year-old Kemview Blackstar Vaneta-ET for $13,200. Vaneta was scored for the first time March S and is a Very Good 88 with an Excellent mammary. She gave 81. S pounds of milk test ing at 5.3 percent fat for her first test. Her Thor son has been sold to an A.I. stud. Her dam was Kemview Vanessa-Et, an Enhancer daughter which classified as a Very Good 88 at 3 years. Stoltzfus wasn’t only buying. A Stoltzfus consignment, flush choice of eight due September, was picked up by Kirby and Sheryl Horst of Newmanstown for $4,100. The dam is Caernarvon Ned Judy-ET, a VGB9, and the sire is Curtmaid Emerald Target, with a TPI of +997. The average selling price for the whole sale was $1,903 per animal. A further breakdown shows that 38 cows sold for $90,600, or an average of $2,455 each. Bred heifers numbered 36 and sold for a total of $70,925, or an average of $1,970. The fitting crew had the ani mals in top stupe.” The fitting crew was headed by Creedin Cornman and Glenn Tripp. “Buyers were from all over,” Raney said, specifying Pennsylva nia, New York, Maryland, New Jersey, Tennessee, North Carolina, California, Missouri and Canada. Auctioneering were Mike Weimer and David Rama, while Horace Backus read pedigrees. The second highest selling ani mal was Teachers Pets Cubby Judith, a Dec. 7-bom calf con signed by Ann Kopp, of Middle town. She was purchased for $6,400 by Tom and Dan Wilson of Saegertown.
