Welk, son of Paul and Beveriy Wclk, Peach Bottom, is the reci pient of the Star Ag Production Award. Welk works on his brother’s dairy farm. The candidates from schools throughout the county are inter viewed for the Star awards by a panel of judges. An application is submitted by all of the candidates, who then go through an interview process. The judges also review each FFA member’s record books and project records since they became FFA members. Based on this information, the judges select the two candidates from the coun ty who they believe represents the county in the areas of agribusiness and ag production. Welk and Althoff will both receive $lOO to' be used toward financing a trip to the National FFA Convention or to be produc tively invested in a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) project. In addition to Welk and Althoff, three other Solanco FFA members received the Red Rose Degree from the county—Betsy Pownall, Greg Sollenberger, and Jill Hamish. This degree is awarded to 8 per cent of the county FFA member ship. To be considered for this degree, each FFA member must submit an application to be judged. Additionally two out standing members one in agri business and the other in produc tion were selected. Matt Welk Grom Solanco was chosen Star Production. His pro jects include dairy herd, field, com for grain, and beef and swine finishing. Matt is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Welk of Peach Bot tom. Judging for Star Production were Brian Zug from Solance; last year’s winner, Rich Powl from Fowl’s Feed Service, Peach Bot tom; and Robert Aukamp, a recent county officer. Star Agribusiness person is Rodney Althoff, also from Solan co. Rodney, son of Mr. and Mrs, Ron Althoff of Quarryville, was chosen for his leadership and dedication to his work. He works part time on a local diary farm.
