Wyoming/Lackawanna Holstein RONALD CLARK Susquehanna Co. Correspondent MESHOPPEN (Wyoming Co.) The annual meeting of the Wyoming/Lackawanna Holstein Association was recently held at the United Methodist Church. A dinner was served by the United Methodist Women. Following the dinner, the business meeting and an honors session were held. The meeting was highlighted by the announcement of a Hall of Fame Award which will become an annual event of the Associa tion. The first recipient of this honor is Clifford Sands, of Tunk hannock. For 23 years, Sands was a director of the Holstein Club, 14 years its secretary, and for five years served as president. He has been a director of the Pennsylva nia State Holstein Association, and served twice as delegate to the National Convention. His name is engraved on a plaque which will be on display at the Wyoming County Extension Office. Another memento was a beautiful clock, handcrafted by one of the club members. The Hall of Fame Award will be presented each year to a person who has made significant contri butions and participated in many activities for the Holstein Associa tion and the agricultural commun ity. Selection will be made by a committee. This year’s committee included Wayne Sherwood, Elwood White, and Foster Const able. He was a director of the Tunkhannock Artificial Breeding Coop, which is now Sire Power; he served on the County Extension Committee for 20 years and was a member of the Wyoming County Planning Com mission for 24 years. He has a long record as a member of the 4-H Advisory Committee, and still serves there. Lastly, his oper ating a large and successful farm was somehow dovetailed into his time and effort to public projects. Congratulatory remarks were also made by neighbors and friends, who cited the support and cooperation of Mrs. Sands. In his response, Sands gave full credit to his wife, Pauline. He introduced his son, Tom, and Tom’s family to the gathering. The warm congratulations of the Holstein Association, as well as his friends and neighbors, were expressed by everyone present. In other business, the nominat ing committee reported the nomi nation of Dale Shupp, Roger Sher wood, and George Shapuk to suc ceed themselves as directors. Election was by acclamation. Roger Sherwood serves as presi dent of the group. Kenneth Rainey, Director of Membership of the Pennsylvania Holstein Association, reported on the fiscal year ending in Septem ber, 1991. He said that the Associ ation was in a favorable financial (215) 267-5400 position, and related that success ful exports of cattle and embryos to overseas countries had contri buted to the fiscal welfare. He encouraged the members to be alert for continued sales, especial ly to the Middle East, as he pre dicted that a minimum of 1,000 head of registered heifers would be needed for export He urged the farmers to register all heifers, as those which might be considered lower quality here would contri bute to improvement in other countries. Sheypuk has a large milking herd and many head of young stock. He has had a thriving business in producing fro zen embryos for international trade. Rainey also reminded that there will be a Spring Show on March 27 at the Farm Show Arena in Harrisburg. There will also be a sale at Penn State in April. A new State Directory of Mem bers is now being made available. Mr. Rainey also announced that Wilkes Barre has been chosen to host the State Convention next year. Frank Insigna, Secretary of the Wyoming/Lackawanna group will be the overall chairman of this event. Robert P. Parr reported on the progress made thus far in organiz ing an Open Dairy Show to be a part of the Wyoming County Fair this fall. Planned for September 5, competition will be open to far mers from Wyoming, Bradford, Luzerne, Lackawanna and Sus quehanna counties, and perhaps others as well. Work is in progress for the planning and construction of two bams, 30 by 60 feet each, and a 48 by 104 foot show ring. 4-H Youth Awards were pre sented by Dale Shupp. Trophies were given to one boy and one girl in each category. First year awards were made to Bobby Sue Adams and Robert Wilson; Junior Awards to Jenny Teel and David Shupp, with Senior Awards being presented to Charlene Shupp and John Maddox. Dale Shupp also announced that Wyoming County Extension Director Robert Hobbes plans to retire at the end of June, 1992. In addition, plans are under way for the celebration of the 75 th anniversary of the Wyoming County Extension Service. It is expected that this event will be held in November.
