Seven new com hybrids have been introduced by Cargill Hybrid Seeds for spring planting. Dr. Jack Carlson, com product manager, said less than one per cent of the hybrid combinations that Cargill initially screens are eventually marketed to farmers. “These seven hybrids have proven exceptional performance in company tests for at least three years and in on-farm tests for at least two years,” he said. Carlson provided the following product descriptions: • Cargill Hybrid Seeds 1727, (80-day relative maturity). This hybrid has very good yield poten tial and standability for its maturity. • Cargill Hybrid Seeds 2217 (85-day relative maturity). The hybrid is noted for its stalk qual ity, grain quality, and yield stability. • Cargill Hybrid Seeds 6269, (110-day relative maturity). The hybrid has good grain quality and ness News “We extended the frame of the ML Pulvi-Mulchers for improved trash flow,” said Carl Miller, sales manager. “On the Series 03 we also added a longer, heavier draw bar to accommodate tractors with dual wheels. The hybrid features excellent stress tolerance, yield stability, and standability. • Cargill Hybrid Seeds 8177 (118-day relative maturity). This hybrid has performed extremely well in high-yielding, irrigated environments in Nebraska, Kan sas, and the Texas high plains. It has excellent quality characteristics. • Cargill Hybrid Seeds 9197 (122-day relative maturity). This three-way hybrid has the larger seed sizes that are desired in some areas. DowElanco is Introducing the new bag for Lorsban™ 15G granulat Insecticide as a result of input from farmers. Bag Streamlines Insecticide Handling CEDAR RAPIDS, lowa A new insecticide bag is taking some of the hassle out of the busy com planting season. And that’s just fme with com growers. The new bag is a result of mark et research that shows com grow ers want insecticides in packaging that is more convenient and efficient. DowElanco surveyed corn growers and, as a result, deve loped a bag to meet growers’ needs. Starting this season, com growers across the United States can purchase Lorsban™ 15G gra nular insecticide in the new bag. “Growers told us they wanted a package that would be easier to open and use,” said Kim Bohlan der, product marketing manager for Lorsban ISG insecticide. “They also wanted something that would minimize their exposure to a product. We listened to the growers and the result is the new bag.” The farmer-designed bag is made of a single-ply, water- and tear resistant material and features a carrying handle and an easy-to open pour spout. The handle allows growers to easily carry two bags at once, away from their bodies. The innovative spout pro vides better pouring control. The bag is also designed so growers can easily carry, open and pour the insecticide while wearing gloves. For decades the industry stan dard for insecticide bags has been a four-ply paper bag. Growers typ ically use their pocket knives to open the bags and often have bits and Black Gum. Additional plant ings include white and red Rho dodendrons and Streamco Willow. Black gum is a beautiful, native tree with brilliant fall colors rang ing from orange-yellow to scarlet to purple. It is one of the most con sistent and most beautiful trees in fall. The small fruit is eaten by many species of birds and mammals. The conservation feature is Streamco Willow, a fast-growing small shrub often used for stabili zation along streambanks and of paper clog the insecticide box es. Moisture is also a concern with paper bags. The new bag will help alleviate these problems. The bag was used on a limited basis in the Northeast in 1991. Pennsylvania com grower Darrell Schlegel, farm manager from Oley, said he likes the bag because it is easier to handle. ‘The bag is unique,” Schlegel said. “It’s much easier to use and you don’t have to worry as much about touching the product It’s easy to open and dump out. You don’t have to cut the bag.” Com growers in the Midwest also have tried the bag extensive ly. Bud Greiner grows 2,200 acres of com near Reinbeck, lowa. He likes the water-resistant feature of the bag. ‘There is nothing worse than having to stop the planter and drive at truck load of insecticide into the shed when rain showers blow up,” Greiner said. “That fea ture alone saves time and money.” Greiner also likes the easy-open spout on the new package because he no longer needs to pull out a knife to open his insecticide bags. “I just pop the bag open with a quick snap and I’m on my way.” Greiner said.
