Sus tainable agriculture, the profitable production of food and other products with minimum risk to the environment, will be featured as part of Penn State’s exhibit at the 76th Pennsylvania State Farm Show, January 11-16 in Harrisburg. “Sustainable agricul ture is emerging as a national priority,” says Dr. James Frazier, pro fessor of entomology and coordinator of the sustainable agriculture display. “People have many different ideas about what sustainable agriculture means. We hope our exhibit gives people a more complete understanding.” The U.S. Department of Agriculture defines sustainable agriculture as “an integrated system of plant and animal pro duction practices having a site-specific application.” To qualify as sustain able, such practices must “satisfy human food and fiber needs; enhance environmental quality and the natural resource base upon which the agricultural economy depends; make the most efficient use of nonrenewable and on-farm resources and integrate, where appropriate, natural bio logical cycles and con trols; sustain the eco nomic viability of farm operations; and enhance the quality of life for far mers and society as a whole.” Penn State’s exhibit will demonstrate some of the benefits of sus tainable agriculture. Faculty and staff from the College of Agricul tural Sciences will be on hand to answer ques tions and describe some of the College’s many research and extension programs that directly contribute to sustainable agriculture. Visitors also can express their opinions on the topic by completing a survey.
