Food
Exporters
ANNAPOLIS, Md.
Maryland Secretary
of Agriculture Robert
L. Walker participated
in the first official busi
ness meeting of the
Maryland Food Expor
ters Association this
month. More than 50
Maryland food compa
nies were on hand. The
goal of the group is to
recruit more Maryland
companies into export
ing their products.
“I compliment Ste
phen Phillips of Phillips
Foods for spearheading
the formation of this
trade association,”
Walker said.
“It is absolutely
essential that Maryland
food businesses come
together to promote
international exports.
Although an individual
company can do it
alone, there is greater
opportunity when we
can work together as a
team promoting a wider
array of products or ser
vices,” said Walker.
“It is our desire to
promote Maryland food
around the world,” said
Phillips.
“With the help of the
Maryland Department
of Agriculture and the
Maryland International
Division, I believe we
will make dramatic
breakthroughs in our
food exports. I urge all
Maryland food compa
nies to consider becom
ing part of the Maryland
Food Exporters Associ
ation,” Phillips said.
During 1991, the
Maryland Department
of Agriculture’s Inter
national Marketing
Division has helped
Maryland food compa
nies sell cattle to the
Caribbean, canned clam
products to Mexico,
wine to Japan, and pro
cessed apple products
and fruit preserves to
Barbados.
“We have made a
good beginning. This
association will allow
us to compete more
effectively in foreign
markets,” Walker said.
