CHELTENHAM, Md. On Friday, November 29, the first annual farmers Christmas market will open at the Southern Mary land Regional Farmers Market in Cheltenham. The market is located on U.S. Rt. 301 south, next to the Veterans cemetery, and will be open every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday until Christmas, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Inside the state warehouse, loc- Farmers Christmas Market To Open al farmers will be selling a variety of handmade crafts, holiday wreaths, door decorations, hand made ornaments, honey, jams and jellies, festive baked goods, poinsettias, winter vegetables, etc. A southern Maryland Christmas tree grower will also be selling trees daily outside the state warehouse. ’ The Southern Maryland Reg ional Farmers market was created in 1989 to provide an opportunity for farmers to expand into alterna tive crops such as fruits and veget ables. The five Southern Mary land counties, Tri-County Coun cil, the Maryland Department of Agriculture, the Governors Task Force, and the cooperative exten sion worked togelher to open a retail farmers market and a whole sale fruit and vegetable auction. This has been an extremely hard year for Southern Maryland fanners. Many farmers lost as much as 50 percent of their veget able crops from this summer’s drought and heat. Farmers recognize that the recession has been hard on every one. The Christmas market repre sents one such effort. Fanners have been preparing homemade gifts to sell during the holiday sea son. There will be a wide assort ment of items for the young and old.
