Brad Moffitt of Marion has been named a national finalist in the FFA Agriscience Teacher of the Year Program. Moffitt, advi sor of the Ridgedale FFA Chapter, is part of a two-teacher program covering areas such as animal sci ence, genetics, engineering and mechanical technologies, business technologies, natural resources, and world agriscience. Moffitt was instrumental in obtaining the Christa McAuliffe Fellowship grant for his program which pro vided funds to develop and imple ment ten laboratory learning areas for students in the school. Donald Heffner Jr. of Akron has been named a regional finalist in the FFA Agriscience Student Recognition Program. Heffner began his water quality testing research as a requirement for a vocational environmental man agement class in high school. His work has given him hands-on experience and has encouraged him to pursue a career in the envir onmental sciences. Heffner is a member of the Akron/Kenmore FFA Chapter. The chapter created an eight-acre natural resource learning center as an extension of the classroom. The chapter also developed projects to support agricultural literacy. Todd Schmitmeyer, 19, of Ver sailles has been named the FFA’s Star Fanner from the Eastern Reg ion. Schmitmeyer, of the Versail les FFA Chapter, began his super vised agricultural experience program in high school with 18 breeding swine and 83 market hogs. Today, his program has expanded to 68 breeding swine and 801 market hogs. Schmitmey er was named national swine pro ficiency award winner in 1990. He plans to expand his program by building new facilities and adding more than 100 sows to his operation. Dodson served as a liaison between the Central FFA Chapter and the peo ple of Shenandoah County in developing the chapter’s BO AC project. He also implemented his own ideas in carrying out various aspects of the project. Heatwole computerized a feeding system for a dairy cattle operation. He also manages the breed, loca tion and re-queening dates of hon ey bee hives. Heatwole is a mem ber of the Fort Defiance FFA Chapter. Matthew Lohr, 20, of Broad way is the 1990-91 National FFA Vice President of the eastern reg ion. During his year of service to the FFA, Lohr traveled more than 200,000 miles and provided lead ership to the more than 382,000 FFA members nationwide. He and the five other national officers met with leaders in agriculture, gov ernment, business and industry .from across the United States and Japan to discuss agricultural issues. Lohr is a freshman at Vir ginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where he is studying agricultural education. His parents are Gary and Ellen Lohr. Wilson Games of Alexandria will receive the FFA VIP Citation for his exemplary service to the organization. Games served as the editor-in-chief of the FFA’s stu dent member magazine for 35 years. He also served as the admi nistrative director of the National FFA Center. Games had written a regular column in each issue of the FFA magazine since June—July, 1958, and has supervised national convention registration for many years.
