WE WORK HARD FOR CUSTOMER SATISFACTION Ida’s Notebook Ida Risser This is the season for fairs. Some are bigger than others but they all take a lot of work and pre paration. I’ve never been an active part of a fair but rather just an observer. As a child I remember the even ing parades at local fairs as being one of the highlights of the fall. My mother got our winter coats out of the mothballs and off we went in our open touring car. Boy, did we give off a smell but the heavy coats felt so good against the nippy air. This year Allen and I chose to go to the York Fair on a Monday afternoon. We usually watch the horse races but found that there were none on this particular day. The weather was warm and sunny " Welcome To The MEAT’N PLACE MEAT MARKET & EATERY 3402 Lincoln Hwy. I don’t remember ever seeing so many rabbits, chickens and geese. The animals certainly keep someone busy tending to their needs. The display of antique dishes and quilts was very colorful. The beautiful crocheted and knitted items must have kept the creator busy for days. And, there were hundreds of drawings and paint ings displayed on the walls. However, my favorite place to visit is the horticultural building. Here they not only have the usual fruits and vegetables but also the unusual. I saw a plant labeled “Sacred Lily of India.” It was a large palm-like plant with a mottled stem. What brought it to my atten tion was the fact that I have a dozen just like it at my home only I was told it was called a “Black China Lily.” 1 was also surprised to see pokeweed berries dis played with edible fruit. I’d always thought they could only be used to make a pink-purple ink. Long ago I saw a letter written in 1870 by my grandfather to my grandmother that used this ink. After a few hours of walking, we sat down and watched the sheep judging while eating a snack. It was a once a year event IN GROUND MANURE STORAGE SYSTEM
