02-Lincaster Farming Saturday, September 21,1991 Worker’s WEST CHESTER (Chester Co.) “Workers comp is self destructing across the country,” Vicki Gittlen, Pennsylvania Far mers Association (PFA) insurance director for Region 1, explained to the directors of the Chester/ Delaware Farmers Association at their monthly meeting held here recently. In other business, the board considered activities for Farm/ City Day, membership planning, update on policy development, and recognized outstanding insur ance service by Melba King, county insurance agent. “There is abuse in the system. It is very difficult to find carriers. Unless the system is improved, the State Workmans Insurance Fund will be the only carrier of workers comp insurance,” Gittlen said. “Any coverage that has health care clauses in it will soon disap pear. This applies to any coverage such as automobile and liability coverage. PFA is represented on a statewide board trying to correct the abuses and prevent a collapse of the system.” Gitllcn credited Melba King, Lincoln University, as being an outstanding insurance agent. “Melba is one of seven agents acoss the state who have been qualified for a trip to the American Farm Bureau Federation Conven tion, held in Kansas City, Mis souri in January of 1992,” Gittlen said. Susan McCardie, West Chester, is the new membership processor for the Chester/Delaware Farmers Association. She will be recording new members as well as renewals. Policies developed at commun ity meetings will be voted on at the fall dinner meeting of the Chester/Delaware Farmers Asso ciation, September 26, at the Octorara Presbyterian Church, Parkesburg, Richard Breckbill, president, Oxford Barclay Hoopes, vice-president, Landen berg, is chairman of the policy development committee. He will carry all policies adopted at this meeting to the State PFA Policy Committee meeting on October 31 in preparation for PFA’s annual meeting November 18-20 in Hershey. David Herr, Parkesburg, chair man for the dinner, said that the speaker would be Keith Eckel, president of the Pennsylvania Farmers Association. Members are urged to make reservations soon for the event. “The government relations committee is locating county farms where legislators will be invitied to meet and visit with farmers association members,” said Bob Lange, chairman, Malvern. This is part of the com mittee’s program for members and legislators to examine farming problems and exchange ideas. Michael Maule, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Maule, Avondale, has won a $lOO savings bond at the state level for his safety poster submission, said Linda Hicks, chairman of the women’s commit tee, West Chester. His poster will be included in the 1992, PFA calendar. He is also eligible for a grand prize of another savings bond. Farm/City Day will be held Saturday, October 26. Tentative plans include a visit to a nursery, dairy farm, sheep and game-bird farm, and vegetable farm. The farms will be grouped in eastern Chester and western Delaware counties. Further information will be available October 1, Hicks said. Ed Cannon, Avondale, regional liaison with DER, said that a meeting of county coordinators in the region was being set up for October. He expects that many of the farming complaints now being sent to DER can be resolved at the county level.
