The number of entries at the Lancaster County 4-H Dairy Show, held Wednesday at Solanco Fairgrounds in Quarryville, showed a continuing level of inter est among youth to participate in the 4-H program. According to county dairy agent, Glenn Shirk, the participa tion was, “about the same as last year, with a slight increase if anything.” Also like last year, the tempera ture was in the mid-90s. But new this year was a division of classes in the 4-H showmanship competitions. Shirk said that the expanding of the classes was in response to new rules and a desire to provide an opportunity for local youth to become eligible for other competi tion: Participation in the age From the left, the winners in the 11- to 13-year-old show manship competitions are Melissa Enk and Sarah Kennel. Lancaster County 4-H Holds Dairy Show divided, three-class competition is now a requirement in order to parti cipate in district 4-H level competition. The top Holstein entry was CG—Glen-Valley Enhan Fancy- ET, a 3-year-old owned by Denise Best, of Holtwood. Reserve grand champion was another 3-year-old, Donegal Creek Bear Kandy, own ed by Janelle Wivell, of Columbia. In the Brown Swiss division, Scott Wagner, of Quarryville, owned the grand champion, junior 2-year-old Windy Acres Erin Sim Eve. The reserve grand champion was aged cow K&Q Delegate Wendy, onwed by Mary Frances Smith, of Denver. In the Guernsey breed, the grand champion was Blue Mu View King Sparky, a junior 2-year-old owned by Brian Smith, of Denver. The reserve grand was an aged cow, WS Telestar Annie, owned by Heather Henisee, of Columbia. In the Jersey breed, an interme diate calf, Milknhoney ET Gold finch, owned by Kimberly Hough, of Peachbottom, was named grand champion. A senior calf was dec lared reserve grand champion no name listed, it was bred and owned by Karen Shaub, of Quarryville. In the Ayrshire breed, animals entered by Heather Becker, of Nar von, took all top placings, except for reserve junior grand champion. The grand champion was GR Nar von Valley’s Champ Garland. The reserve champion was Becker’s GR Johnny’s Gwen. In the showmanship contest, in the 8- to 10-year-old division, Zachary Meek was first, Sarah Bard, and Nathan Kreider third. In the 11- to 13-year-old divi sion, Melissa Enck was first, Sarah Kennel second, and Elizabeth Smith third. Among the 14- to 18-year-olds, Matt Welk was first. Matt Kolb was second and Heather Becker was third. Judges for the colored breed show was Harvey Stoltzfus, while John Hubschmidt, of New Jersey, was the judge for the colored breeds. Judging for showmanship was Joyce Crothers and Glenn Stoltzfus.
