DEKALB Completes China Breeding Project

Swine Breeders, Inc. announces
the successful completion of a
breeding project with the People’s
Republic of China. The project is
scheduled to produce in excess of
1 million market hogs per year
once the program reaches maturi
ty-
After two years of dedicated
preparation, breeding stock was
shipped from DEKALB’S
research and development farms
on May 2, 1991 and arrived in
Beijing, China on May 6, 1991
All of the animals arrived in excel
lent condition despite the four-day
journey.
During the preparation process,
the breeding stock successfully
passed the nrorous health require
ments needed tor swine importa

China’s per capita consumption
of all meat is about one third of
U.S. levels, despite its production
of nearly 40 percent of the world’s
pork. To increase per capita con
sumption, the Chinese government
plans to significantly expand the
production of high quality lean
pork within the next 15 years.
