The Farm Credit Bank of Baltimore and its 17 affiliated Agricultural Credit Associations reported com bined net income of $6.2 million for the Ist quarter of 1991, a 24 precent or $1.2 million increase over the same quarter of 1990, ac cording to financial reports releas ed recently. Loan volume during the quarter rose to $3.14 billion for the Mid- Atlantic region’s largest agricul tural lenders, an increase of $4O million or 1.3 percent above De cember 31, 1990 and up almost 8 percent or $220 million from the same period last year. Bank offi cials noted that the $3.14 billion in outstanding loans was a record high with the increased lending activity during the quarter mark ing 14 consecutive quarters of loan volume growth. ‘The agricultural economy in the region has remained strong and farmers are fairly confident. despite some continued weakness in other industries,” said Gene L. Swackhamer, president of the Farm Credit Bank of Baltimore. “We are seeing a willingness to commit to long-term fixed rate loans for real estate purchases or refinancing. “The credit quality of Farm Credit’s loan portfolio has not changed significantly from year end,” he said. “However, we may start to see some minor effect later this year if the current economic recession continues and begins af fecting borrowers’ repayment ca pacity, particularly for those rely ing on sources of off-farm income from recession impacted indus tries for loan payments.” Net interest income for the quarter was $22.4 million, an in crease of $3.3 million or 17.3 per cent above the same quarter lasi year. Reports indicate the increase in net interest income was because of higher levels of earning assets and lower funding costs. Route 30 West at the Centerville Exit.
