More than 100 local resi dents concerned about the quality of their water had it tested as part of the Penn State Cooperative Extension water quality clinic program. The clinic, held April 8, featured Dr. William Sharpe, water resour ce specialist, and Brian Swisstock, water quality expert, both from Penn State. Approximately 100 people attended the afternoon or evening sessions held in the extension meeting room of the Wayne Coun ty Courthouse. The program, aimed at individu als with private wells or springs, stressed the need for testing these private water supplies. Sharpe told the group, “The quality of water from a private supply is the respon sibility of its owner. If you don’t lest your water, no one else will.” He also recommended that water be tested for bacteria and nitrates at least once a year and for other chemicals at least every three years. You should also have your water tested if you have drilled a second well or changed the pump or plumbing. Additionally, you should test your water if you note a change in the appearance, taste, or odor of the water. Its quality is affected by changes in tempera ture, amount of rainfall and runoff, and the activity in the watershed. Spring water should be tested more often. Sharpe indicated that two-thirds or 66 percent of the springs tested in northeastern Pen nsylvania have tested positive for bacterial contamination. Brian Swisstock discussed the safely of roadside springs. He pointed out to the audience that springs should not be considered safe to drink from unless they have been tested. He also discussed how contamination of water supplies may occur and what we can do to protect the quality and safety of our water. Drinking contaminated water can pose health risks, especially to young children. Water with high levels of lead can lower the IQ of children who drink it. Besides the potential health problems of diges tive upset, etc., poor quality water can have other negative effects. For example, “Water contami nated with iron can stain laundry and bathroom fixtures, and taste bad,” said Sharpe. Penn State Cooperative Exten sion has several water quality fact sheets and the publication, “Safe guarding Wells and Springs From Bacterial Contamination,” avail able at the extension office. • Independent Agents Representing Frank Mltchall Mifflin Centre Juniata Huningdon 717-244-2418 Wilbur Millar Crawford •14-724*2730 of mushroom growing, mushroom science, and mushroom market ing,” said Dr. Paul Wuest, profes sor of plant pathology and chair man of the short course planning committee. “In addition, topics of the short course will reflect envir onmental protection and food safe ty, concerns that are foremost in the minds of growers.” The short course, which deals with the Agaricus mushroom, will take place on June 10, 11, and 12.
