C4-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, April 27, 1991 Learn To Manage Root Rot DEKALB. 111. Soybean far mers face a variety of diseases that can reduce yields. But phytophtho ra root rot (PRR) has become per haps the most damaging of all soy bean diseases. Though found more often in Illi nois and areas east, it can occur anywhere excessive moisture becomes a problem. Yet growers can manage this disease effectively. PRR can invade the roots of both seedlings and more mature plants, said Herb Brown, regional agronomist for DEKALB Plant Genetics. Though most severe in low, poorly drained soils, it can be especially damaging to suceptible soybean varieties grown in PRR infested soils that are saturated beyond capacity. “Since free water is required for infection, farmers can reduce the potential for PRR by reducing soil compaction, improving soil drain age, and adopting tillage methods and crop rotations that minimize destruction of soil structure,” Brown said. Despite these efforts, certain fields and segments of the U.S. soybean production area will still have problems with PRR. But far mers can utilize chemical and genetic resistance to minimize the yield-robbing effects of PRR, said Bison (Yes, Bison!) Arrive MESHOPPEN (Wyoming Co.) Bison are here! He said growers can apply meta laxyl to the seed or to the soil at planting time. It typically is used when farmers plant a susceptible variety in fields where PRR has been a frequent problem. Protec tion will vary from seedling stage to full-season maturity, depending on the amount and method of chemical usage. Another option is planting PRR resistant soybean varieties. Soy bean breeders have been very suc cessful in developing varieties that contain one or more genes that impart PRR resistance without sacrificing .the very important characteristics of high-yield poten tial, standability, shatter resistance and quick, strong emergence, the DEKALB agronomist said. “When farmers utilize PRR resistant soybean varieties, they are reducing the risks associated with growing soybeans in PRR prone soils,” Brown said. “This will become increasingly impor tant as farmers adopt some of the soil-saving practices required by conservation legislation.” For example, the heavy residue asociated with no-till planting can result in cooler, wetter soils that more easily produce conditions favorable to PRR infection.
