QUARRYVILLE (Lancaster Co.) The twelfth annual Solan co Young Farmers awards banquet was held recently at the Memorial United Methodist Church. Mark Welk, Quarryville, was recognized as the Outstanding Young Farmer under 30, and Carl Kreider, Quarryville, was selected as the winner in the over-30 categ ory. The active member award was awarded to Ed Zug, Peach Bottom. Ed has been active as a chapter officer for 10 years and recently completed a term as a state officer. This year’s appreciation award was presented to Wilmer Nissley, Mount Joy, for his contributions and support of the Young Farmer program. Nissley has worked closely with the chapter for the past four years in weighing the yields from their hybrid com test plot. Nissley received an engraved plaque in appreciation of his dedi cation. The following com awards were presented to winners in the annual com production contest: R. Edwin Hamish, Christiana, produced 171 bushels of shelled com per acre to win the grain division. Dale Herr, Kirkwood, was third with 159 bushels per acre. Herr also received the award for the highest grain yield average for the past three years with 169.4 bushels. In the com silage division, Karl Herr, Kirkwood, placed first with 27.4 tons per acre of 65 percent moisture com silage. Dwayne Pel fer, Kirkwood, was second with 26.9 tons per acre and Larry Aar on, Quanyville, placed third with 26.4 tons per acre. Ed Zug, Peach Bottom, received the trophy for the highest silage yield average for the past three years with 25.3 tons per acre. The following dairy production awards were presented. Richard Brenneman, Quarryville, received the top Holstein herd award with 21,054 pounds of milk and 779 pounds of fat. George Nickle, Quarryville, had the high Holstein cow for fat with 1,144 pounds.
