S. Siegel Professor and Head Dept, of Poultry Science The most common use for broil er and turkey litter has been fertil izer. However, the concentration of animals per tillable acre in some areas of the state has increased to the point where excessive applica tions of manure, which contain high levels of nitrogen and pho sphorus, may be becoming detri mental to water supplies and create environmental problems in surface water runoff. Therefore, alternatives to the application of manures to adjacent land are being evaluated. Under the direction of F. V. Muir, research at Penn State has exa mined the incineration of poultry litter and its use as an energy sour ce for heating broiler houses. The burning of litter results in an ash residue that is high in calcium, phosphorus, and potassium. Because phosphorus is the third most expensive nutrient in poultry MILK. IT DOES A BODYCOOK Kubota. Full Service, Parts And Rental ,v / diets, if the litter ash could be used as an acceptable phosphorus ingre dient, this would enhance the feasibility of burning broiler litter as an energy source. Preliminary chemical analysis of broiler litter ash showed the major mineral components to be calcium, 15.4 percent; phosphor us, 9.40 percent; and potassium, 7.12 percent. However, all phosphorus sour ces are not equally available to chickens. Therefore, it was neces sary to compare the “bioavailabili ty” of the phosphorus from the lit ter ash with a standard source such as DiCal. The results from two experi ments, using growth rate to 3 weeks of age and tibia (leg bone) ash as criteria, demonstrated that broiler litter ash could be used as a phosphorus ingredient for poultry. The availability of the litter ash phosphorus ranged from 78 to 83 percent of that from DiCal. A nutritionist would take these fig ures into consideration when for mulating a balanced ration.
