    European Journalists Visit United States
WASHINGTON D.C.—Nine
central European environmental
journalists visited Lancaster Coun
ty on their way to California this
week. The journalists want to study
evnironmental reporting tech
niques and management strategies
in the United States through a two
month fellowship program coordi
nated by the National Safety Coun
cil’s Environmental Health Center.
Lamonte Garber, Chesapeake
Bay Foundation’s agricultural spe
cialist, said the visit to several
Amish farms and several farms in
the Quarryville area was very
enlightening to the visitors. The
journalists were very interested to
see how farmers here are address
ing environmental problems and
what they saw here was very diffe
rent
For example, Bill Aaron, Quar
ry ville, has a much larger dairy and
poultry operation than any the
European journalists had ever
seen. While they may have collec
tive farms, their farms are not near
ly so large.

conservation terraces are installed,
the visitors had never seen or heard
of this common conservation prac

their countries.
Also, the carousel milking unit
was very intriguing to the visitors.
The journalists come from coun
tries where governments have
given journalists much more free
don of the press. And these writers
consider it their responsibility to
raise the level of the public’s envir
onmental knowledge. Acid rain,
air pollution from toxic chemicals
and ground water contimination
are all problems they face. In addi
tion, their economies are in sham
bles. So they need all the help they
can get to present new ideas. It was
important for the journalists to see
that their problems were also prob
lems we face also.
The project is funded by the Ger
man Marshall Fund. And the Che
sapeake Bay Foundation, along
with the Lancaster County Conser
vation District, helped host the loc
al stop for the visitors.

Reporters in some parts of Central
Europe are now openly writing on
pollution problems which just a
year ago had in effect been state
secrets.
The “Journalists Helping Jour

benefit all reporters involved in
the project. Central Europe jour
