The relationship between con sumer purchasing decisions and waste reduction and recycling will be demonstrated as part of Penn State’s exhibit at the 75th annual Pennsylvania Farm Show in Har risburg, January 6-11, 1991. “More than 50 percent of the public waste stream consists of paper products and yard waste, both of which are recyclable,” said* Guy Temple, professor of cooperative extension and area extension agent in Union County. Consumers can do more than recycle cans and bottles, said Temple. A DPI director since 1984, Belfany chaired DPl’s record-breaking 1990 fund drive. DPl’s 1991 first vice president is Dr. G. Thomas Holder of Salis bury, director of avian health for Allen’s Hatchery, Inc., Seaford, Delaware. Holder has been active in DPI for many years, serving as Show visitors other methods of reducing solid waste to alleviate the tremendous strains placed on current and proposed landfills. “Each day, Pennsylvanians generate about five pounds of waste per person,” said Temple. “A staggering amount of this waste could be eliminated through more informed purchasing decisions.” Penn State faculty and staff will be on hand daily to answer ques tions about solid waste disposal and recycling.
