The Basic Formula Price ended up at $10.48 per hundredweight (cwt.). This is a whopping $2.02 lower than last month and surpas ses the previous record of $1.72 drop in February of this year. That was part of a three month decline of $2.91 per cwt. Then over the summer you gradually gained back $1.41 over a four month period. In August, when prices would normally increase, they started down and you have had a drop of $2.95 in the last three months. The Class 1 price in Order 4 was $16.12 per cwt. for October and will be $15.53 in November. For December the Class 1 price will be $13.51. The Class II price shows up immediately and so it was $10.56 per cwt. for October. Milk production is continuing to increase in the Order 4 area. It increased 5.1 percent over October a year ago or 23.7 million pounds for the month. Collision is to talk about “An Insect-Borne Virus Common to the United State Is an Important Cause of Severe Birth Defects in Sheep.” The talk centers on Cache Val ley virus (CVV), a mosquito transferred virus that caused a number of severe birth defects in sheep in the mid-Atlantic region last spring. Although the virus has been known to infect many verte brates, including sheep, cattle and humans, as well as a number of dif ferent insects, infections were thought to be benign until 1987, when scientists at Texas A&M All Priced To Be Competitive were able to discover the link between virus and birth defects. CVV is transmitted by a number of biting insects and affects a number of mammalian hosts. Dr. Scott Barao, and extension livestock specialist with the Uni versity of Maryland, is to provide an update on ewe management at lambing time and tips for preven tion of problems. A panel discussion with all speakers and Dr. Douglas Carmel, a Maryland livestock extension veterinarian, completes the day’s events. The panel session is expected to last VA hours.
