LANCASTER (Lancaster Co.)
Sixteen competitors modeled
the classy look of wool in the
Make-lt-With-Wool contest held
December 8 at the Sheraton East,
Lancaster.
Marie France Reyes topped the
winners in all categories and will
be sent on the all-expenses-paid
trip to the national convention held
at Long Beach, California, on
January 17 to 20.
To win, a contestant must have
more than a finely constructed gar
ment, she must present an overall
picture of the modem well dressed.
These two top winners in the Make-it-Wlth-Wool state
contest will travel to California in January to compete
nationwide. Christie Gallagher, left, is the junior winner, and
Marie France Reyes, left, is the senior winner.
Touch , Sew,
versatile young woman. Her
knowledge of fabric and design,
the fit of the garment, as well as its
suitability to her age and way of
life must be displayed with com
mendable poise.
Reyes modeled a two-piece
sateen wool outfit. This was her
fourth year in the annual competi
tion, and the second time that she
advanced to national competition.
The Greensburg woman is a
senior at Indiana University of
Pennsylvania where she majors in
fashion merchandising.
Reyes paid $4O a yard for the
wool that she tailored from a Vog
ue pattern that she altered.
Wear
Reyes attests to having a natural
talent for fixing machines and sew
ing. She recalls that at 12 years of
age, she found a broken sewing
machine, fixed it, and taught her
self to sew.
While in college, she alters dres
ses and formats for classmates.
“People seem intrigued by the
things that I make. I think it is real
ly sad that more people can’t sew,”
she said.
Although Reyes will teach sew
ing skills to interested persons, she
said, “If you don’t have it (talent)
in yourself, it is hard to teach a
person.”
After graduation, she plans to
open a bridal shop with her father,
Mike Reyes. Her mother is
Pierrette.
Another top winner, Christie J.
Gallagher of Uniontown, is also
eligible to attend national competi
tion. Christie placed first in the
junior division with her 100%
wool forest green skirt and a plaid
vest with a black velveteen collar.
The association hopes to raise
enough money to send her; other
wise, she will need to pay her own
travel expenses.
Those who compete nationally,
must win at state competition after
placing first in regional
competition.
Tara Yuhas of Seotrium placed
second in the junior division. Hon
orable mentions went to Amy Sue
Eshelman, Sinking Spring; Jodell
Ann Rhoads, Berlin; and Francis
Shick, New Castle.
Other entries in the senior divi
sion included second-place winner
Amber Dawn Sertkin of Three
Springs; Lori Brandt of Manheim,
and Anette Lovell of University
Park.
In the adult division, Ruth God
dard of Hollsopple placed first
with a wool plaid suit in lavendar,
black, purple, rose, and aqua. Sec
ond place went to Katherine Gren
ci of New Castle, and honorable

Atglen.
Debbie Black of Boswell and
Trisha Gallagher of Uniontown
placed first and second respective
ly in the preteen division. Debbie
